Hygea Healthcare is seeking Peer Support Specialists (PSS) to join our groundbreaking initiative of embedding peer support into emergency rooms (ERs) to enhance care for individuals experiencing mental health and substance use crises.
Why This Role Matters
As a Peer Support Specialist, you will be a vital part of the ER team, offering compassion, understanding, and real-world recovery experience to individuals in crisis. Your role will help bridge the gap between emergency medical care and long-term recovery, ensuring that patients receive the support, resources, and encouragement they need.
What You'll Do
- Provide Emotional Support: Offer peer-based support, active listening, and de-escalation techniques to patients in crisis.
- Assist with Triage: Help identify patients who could benefit from peer support and advocate for their needs.
- Enhance Discharge Planning: Connect patients to community-based resources and ensure a smoother transition out of the ER.
- Collaborate with ER Teams: Work alongside doctors, nurses, and mental health professionals to integrate peer support into the hospital workflow.
- Promote Recovery & Resilience: Use your personal experience to inspire hope and empower patients toward lasting wellness.
What We're Looking For
- Personal lived experience with mental health challenges or substance use recovery and a strong commitment to peer support.
- Completion of peer support training and certification.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced, high-stress environment while maintaining professionalism and empathy.
- Strong communication skills and the ability to collaborate with multidisciplinary teams.
- Knowledge of community-based recovery resources and support services.
