Essential Functions:
Duties & Responsibilities
Departmental Management
- Develops and oversees implementation of annual and multi-year fundraising campaigns and activities, including but not limited to individual donor appeals, events, donor communications, and privately funded programs and initiatives.
- Manages a consolidated schedule for donor and funder engagement.
- Supports and partners with the Chief Executive & Vision Officer, Program Directors, Senior Leaders, and Board members on all fundraising efforts to ensure relationship-based and results-oriented approach.
- Manage a portfolio of donors, funders, and prospects, and personally cultivate, solicit, and steward gifts in person and in writing.
- Articulates the case for support for HHCS in compelling language that reflects the vision and goals of the organization.
- Oversees research and trends in the field of philanthropy to ensure the integration of best practices across the organization.
- Develops relationships with Board members to optimize fundraising, sponsorships, volunteerism, and organizational advocacy.
- Function as a liaison between the organization and funding sources to appropriately implement proposed programs and provide quality reporting on impact and achievements.
- Leads the strategy on grant proposal development and corporate sponsorships.
- Collaborates with the Senior Director of Communications and Marketing on the development of donor-facing communications and materials.
Partnership Development
- Collaborates with the Government Grants and the Innovation teams on raising public and private funds.
- Provides direction and support to their individual work streams and encourage teamwork and collaboration.
- Assesses fundraising and grant writing capacity of current staff leadership and create a professional development strategy to improve effectiveness.
- Partners with the Chief Executive & Vision Officer to plan for the expansion of the development team within the next fiscal year. Work with Human Resources to develop personnel activities, including the hiring, training, defining of job descriptions, and performance review process for the team.
- Provides development planning, technical assistance, training, and development to leadership and board members.
- Represents HHCS at a variety of external councils, coalitions, boards, committees, and civic or governmental bodies upon authorization.
Metric Management
- Creates consistent and ad hoc reports measuring progress against goals
- Collaborates closely with internal program and finance partners to coordinate and monitor progress toward and compliance with commitments.
- Prepares private revenue budgets and monitor progress toward fundraising goals
- Prepares and deliver regular reports and analyses to internal and Board stakeholders.
- Other duties as assigned.
Supervisory/Collaboration Responsibilities (if applicable):
- In collaboration with Human Resources, recruits and retains top talent, establishing HHCS as a broadly viewed employer of choice.
- Sets clear direction, priorities, and measurable goals for advancement professionals and administrative support personnel.

Education and Experience:
- Bachelor’s degree from an institute of higher learning in a field related to non-profit management, philanthropy, public relations, communications, or business administration is required. Master’s degree preferred.
- Minimum seven (7) years of relevant experience serving in a leadership capacity, preferably in a nonprofit organization required.
- Minium three (3) years of management experience.
Certifications/Licenses:
- Certified Fund-Raising Executive (CFRE) Certification preferred.
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities (K/S/A):
- Proven ability to drive fundraising results in a complex, fast-paced, dynamic environment.
- Ability to balance and contribute to high-level strategy development and tactical details of implementation.
- Knowledge of local, state, and national philanthropic landscape.
- Knowledge of nonprofit finance, budgeting, and accounting processes with ability to navigate restricted, unrestricted, and multi-year gift arrangements.
- Mission-orientation with demonstrated experience in expanding donor relationships over time.
- Excellent communication skills. Strong networker, convener, relationship builder and communicator with experience collaborating with diverse work teams and stakeholders.
- Demonstrated ability to handle confidential and sensitive information possessing skills to manage situations in a professional and diplomatic manner.
- A high degree of collaboration and emotional intelligence, self-motivation, and analytical ability.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and other software routinely used by Heartland Human Care Services.
- Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
- Ability to work independently and remain self-motivated with minimal direct supervision.
- Strategic thought partnership and consultancy skills.
Work Arrangement:
- This role is eligible for a “hybrid” or “remote” work arrangement. If hybrid, it is expected this person would be able to meet for “in person” meetings when needed or at the request of others. In-person meetings may be required on a regular basis (weekly, monthly, etc.). There may also be the availability to work from home when appropriate.
Work Environment:
- The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
- Each program site operates on a 24/7 basis, 365 days per year. To meet both the needs of our participants and contractual obligations, employees are required to be flexible regarding scheduling and work location.
- Program sites are located throughout the Chicago area, including the North and South sides of Chicago, as well as the suburbs. Employees may be required to report to any one of our locations on a temporary or permanent basis.
Physical Demands:
- While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk and listen.
- The employee is regularly required to sit, stand, and walk.
- The employee must be able to stoop, kneel and/or crawl.
- The employee is regularly required to use hands to key, handle, or feel and reach with hands and arms.
