Summary
The role of the director of public relations and strategic communications is one that requires constant attention to detail and an eye for strategy. Overseeing all aspects of internal and external public relations and communications for the THA. This duties for this position include media relations and communications with business and governmental officials, internal and external public, clients, stakeholders, and THA team members. Customary public relations duties such as writing press releases, garnering media as needed, promoting THA, and upholding favorable public image with internal and external clients and partnerships. Strategizes and manage crisis situations and communications for THA. Manage a positive social media presence, prepare content, photographs, storytelling that communicates the good work the Authority is doing with clients and internal/external partners and stakeholders. Must be able to manage a variety of responsibilities at once while still maintaining focus on the big picture and positive THA brand. This role will require program and event coordination, ability to lead and manage teams, consultants or individuals who work on PR-related projects and events. Maintain historical data and records of special projects and programs, including speech writing, promotion of events and nurturing community engagement. This position also is the custodian of public records for the THA and must maintain compliance with Florida public records laws.
Essential Job Functions
Developing marketing campaigns to promote events and activities to increase awareness of THA mission objectives.Writing articles for newspapers and other publications to promote THA mission, programs, events, and other activitiesWrite media alerts, press releases and coordinating media coverage of THA’s programs, special events and ribbon cuttings. Scheduling interviews with reporters from radio stations, television stations, and other media outlets.Develop and maintain a comprehensive media contact list.Developing and enhance marketing plans to promote THA in a positive imagine, branding the THA as one of the nation’s leading housing agencies. Serve as a liaison to the THA Board of Commissioners to ensure they are equipped for meetings, speaking engagements, and opportunities to advance the Mission of the THA.Coordinating public relations campaigns for special events such as award ceremonies, community, and client outreach events and others. Create and design alluring collateral, i.e., brochures, flyers, and a monthly newsletter to cross-brand THA favorably locally and nationally. This may from time to time include modifications and rebranding of the logo, colors, fonts to create an always relevant brand for THA.
Create and manage videography development and content for promotions and social media.Developing strategies for managing crisis communications and recovery. Preparing speeches for executives within an organization, including commissioners, executive staff and other high-level management. Work closely with THA executive team and make recommendations on how best to position the organization in a positive image to its clients, stakeholders, and community.Partner to work with THA residents, clients, and off-site offices to promote programming, extra-curricular activities, etc.
Plan and develop large-scale events, i.e., art unveiling, fundraising or other THA events. Create and maintain accurate data and records of PR/Marketing results, large-scale events attendance, and outreach, including fundraising strategies for THA.Oversees Tampa Housing Authority interactions with the public through implementing content strategies on social media platforms. Duties include analyzing engagement data, identifying trends in customer interactions, and planning digital campaigns to build community online.Manage and execute all content and social media platforms, i.e., Twitter, Facebook, Instagram and LinkedIn accounts on behalf of THA. Supervise and work closely with administrative assistant.
Prepare the THA monthly Board report, annual report and annual management report by conceptualizing the products, gathering information from THA departments, managing the creation and production of the final publications.Inform public officials, interest groups, the general public, about programs, and accomplishments of THA, using a variety of modes of communication. Receive calls from the press and public and respond appropriately. Conduct interviews with employees, contractors, partners, and participants in order to write articles for publication. Develop productive professional relationships with media, elected and government officials and meet with them regularly in order to provide information about THA.
Take photographs and produce video productions of programs and projects from beginning to end in order to track progress and provide historical record of projects.Maintain newspaper articles about projects.Archive photographs in order to provide a historical record of programs.Serve as the custodian of public records for the THA.Create and maintain public records in accordance with Florida public records laws.
Respond timely and effectively to requests for public information
Supervision Participate in pre-employment interviews and make hiring recommendations as needed.Interpret and apply THA personnel policies, departmental policies, and other relevant policies and procedures.Review time and leave reports for assigned staff.Train or assist in training subordinate staff and provide department leadership.Ensure timely completion of performance evaluations for staff.Counsel employee regarding job performance and document in accordance with established procedures.Recommend disciplinary action as needed.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and AbilitiesKnowledge of the principals and practices of public relations, including marketing, advertising, graphic design, etc.Knowledge of English, spelling, and program terminology.Knowledge of research and report preparation techniques and procedures.Knowledge of the principles of management and supervision.Knowledge of Florida public records laws.Ability to work in a dynamic environment that require the incumbent to be sensitive to change and responsive to changing goals, priorities, and needs.Ability to perform professional-level work dealing with data, people, and technology that relates to administrative, technical, scientific, engineering, accounting, legal, or managerial skills.
Ability to set priorities, plan and implement activities to maximize efficiency.Ability to provide information in a courteous diplomatic manner.Ability to use a computer to store, retrieve and compile data, prepare reports, newsletter, brochures, and promotional materials.Ability to operate standard office equipment such as computer, scanner, calculator, copy machine, fax machine, telephone system, etc. Ability to maintain a variety of files and records, and to prepare reports and answer questions from the records.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with officials, other employees, residents, and the general public.Ability to learn and master Florida public records laws and apply good processes and procedures for administration of THA public documents dissemination and records retention.Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.Skill in the use of computer software to facilitate efficient completion of tasks and to obtain and present information.Skill in dealing with people in a diplomatic manner.
Skill in presenting ideas and information orally, in writing, and in publications.
Minimum Qualifications
- Requires a Bachelor’s Degree in Communications, Marketing, Public Relations or closely related major.
- Requires four (4) years of progressively responsible experience in Marketing, Media Relations or related field; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job.
Other: Valid Florida Driver’s License Insurable under the agency’s insurance policy
