JOB TITLE: Emergency Department Technician (ED Tech)

POSITION SUMMARY: The Emergency Department Technician (ED Tech) provides clinical and technical support to the Emergency Department team in delivering timely, safe, and compassionate patient care. Working under the supervision of registered nurses and physicians, the ED Technician assists with patient care activities, basic clinical procedures, and department operations in a fast-paced emergency care environment.

The ED Technician plays a key role in maintaining a safe and organized care environment while supporting efficient patient throughput. This role requires strong communication skills, attention to detail, and the ability to respond quickly to changing patient needs.

Essential Functions:

Patient Care and Operational Support

Assist nurses and providers with patient care activities and clinical procedures

Obtain and document vital signs, weight, and other patient measurements

Assist with patient mobility, transfers, and positioning while maintaining patient safety

Transports patients within the hospital and department

Support patient intake and preparation for examinations or procedures

Perform electrocardiograms (EKGs) and other basic diagnostic procedures as trained

Assist with specimen collection and transport according to department protocols

Support clinical staff during emergency interventions and trauma situations

Maintain a clean, safe, and organized patient care environment

Stocking, outdating, and ensuring department preparedness

Monitor patients and promptly report changes in condition to nursing staff

Assist with room turnover and preparation between patients to support patient flow

Support documentation and communication within the care team when appropriate

Clean and maintain clinical equipment and supplies according to infection prevention standards

Health Unit Coordinator and Patient Registration

Cross train to ED Health Unit Coordinator role for purposes of break coverage

Collect and verify demographic, insurance, and contact information

Accurately enter and update patient information within the electronic health record (EHR) system

Provide patients and families with registration forms, consent documents, financial aid packet, and other pertinent information

Communicate with other registration/HUC staff and clinical teams to ensure accurate and timely patient documentation

Support patient identification and wristband verification in accordance with safety protocols

Qualifications:

Required Education:

High school diploma or equivalent required

Required Licensure:

Washington State Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) or Washington State Certified Medical Assistant (CMA).

If the applicant does not have a CNA or CMA upon hire, a Washington State Nursing Assistant Registered (NAR) is required, and there must be plans to enroll in a certification-qualifying program. The classroom training must be completed within the 90-day probation period, and registration on the DOH website must be completed within 6 months of hire (tuition assistance may be available per request).

Specialty Certification: Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required

Preferred Experience: Previous emergency department, hospital, patient registration, or healthcare experience preferred.

Exposure to infectious diseases, bodily fluids, and other healthcare-related hazards.

Compliance with infection prevention, safety, and emergency protocols.

Working day, evening, night, weekend, and holiday shifts depending on operational needs.

Working in a high-acuity, fast-paced, and unpredictable environment.

Physical Demands:

Ability to stand and walk for extended periods, often throughout the majority of a shift.

Frequent bending, reaching, stooping, kneeling, and crouching while assisting with patient care.

Ability to assist with lifting, transferring, and repositioning patients, including lifting up to 35–50 pounds independently and more with assistance or mechanical devices.

Frequent pushing and pulling of stretchers, wheelchairs, beds, and medical equipment.

Manual dexterity required for operating clinical equipment, computers, and assisting with procedures.

Ability to visually observe patient conditions, read monitors, and review documentation.

Ability to hear alarms, verbal instructions, and patient needs in a busy emergency department environment.

Ability to respond quickly to urgent and emergent patient care situations.
