Stationary Engineer

JOB SUMMARY
- The Stationary Engineer is responsible for the safe, reliable, and efficient operation, monitoring, maintenance, and control of the hospital's physical plant and utility systems. Under the requirements of Massachusetts General Laws (MGL) Chapter 146 and 522 CMR 1.00, the incumbent shall operate and/or take charge of boilers, pressure vessels, and associated plant equipment as required by licensure. The Engineer ensures continuous operation of critical building systems supporting patient care, regulatory compliance, life safety, infection prevention, and environmental control within a healthcare facility accredited by The Joint Commission.
  The Stationary Engineer monitors and maintains steam generation, heating, ventilation, air conditioning (HVAC), medical support systems, emergency power equipment, water treatment systems, and related infrastructure. The position responds to routine and emergency situations, performs inspections and preventive maintenance activities, and assists in maintaining compliance with applicable federal, state, local, and accreditation standards.
JOB REQUIREMENTS
- Experience:
  - Three (3) years of experience operating and maintaining boilers, HVAC equipment, central utility plants, industrial facilities, healthcare facilities, or comparable mechanical systems.
  - Experience monitoring and troubleshooting building automation systems, mechanical equipment, and utility distribution systems.
  - Experience responding to equipment alarms, system failures, and facility emergencies.
  - Previous experience in an acute care hospital, healthcare facility, or other 24/7 critical operations environment.
  - Experience working in facilities accredited by The Joint Commission, preferred.
  - Experience with computerized maintenance management systems (CMMS), preferred.
  - Experience with emergency generators, steam systems, chilled water systems, and water treatment programs, preferred.
- Education:
  - High school diploma or equivalent (GED).
  - Technical school, vocational training, or associate degree in engineering technology, HVAC, facilities management, industrial maintenance, or a related field, preferred.
- Licensure & Certifications:
  - 3CLENG - Valid Massachusetts 3rd Class Engineer License or higher, issued pursuant to MGL Chapter 146, required.
  - Massachusetts Refrigeration Technician License, preferred.
  - OSHA 10-Hour or OSHA 30-Hour Training, preferred.
  - Certified Healthcare Facility Operator (CHFO) or equivalent healthcare facilities credential, preferred.
  - EPA Section 608 Certification, preferred.
  - CPR/AED Certification, preferred.
SKILLS & ABILITIES
- Technical Skills
- Knowledge of boiler plant operations, steam generation, condensate return systems, and pressure vessel operations.
- Knowledge of HVAC systems, chillers, pumps, air handlers, cooling towers, and related equipment.
- Knowledge of electrical distribution systems, emergency generators, transfer switches, and life safety systems.
- Ability to read and interpret mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and control system drawings and schematics.
- Ability to operate, monitor, and troubleshoot Building Automation Systems (BAS).
- Understanding of preventive maintenance practices and predictive maintenance principles.
- Familiarity with water treatment systems and utility plant chemistry.
- Regulatory & Compliance Knowledge
- Knowledge of MGL Chapter 146 and applicable Massachusetts regulations governing boiler and pressure vessel operation.
- Understanding of healthcare facility standards and regulatory requirements.
- Familiarity with The Joint Commission Environment of Care (EC), Life Safety (LS), and Emergency Management (EM) standards.
- Knowledge of applicable OSHA, NFPA, CMS, and local code requirements.
- Operational Capabilities
- Ability to independently operate and take charge of a licensed boiler plant.
- Ability to identify abnormal operating conditions and implement corrective actions.
- Ability to prioritize work in a fast-paced healthcare environment.
- Ability to respond effectively to facility emergencies and utility interruptions.
- Ability to participate in rotating on-call, weekend, holiday, and off-shift coverage as required.
- Communication & Interpersonal Skills
- Ability to communicate effectively with clinical staff, contractors, regulatory inspectors, and leadership.
- Ability to accurately document inspections, maintenance activities, and operating logs.
- Strong customer service orientation and professionalism.
  
  Desired Skills and Training
- Experience supporting mission-critical healthcare operations.
- Knowledge of infection control risk assessment (ICRA) principles during maintenance and construction activities.
- Experience with energy management and utility conservation programs.
- Familiarity with computerized maintenance management systems (CMMS) and work order management.
- Ability to analyze equipment trends and recommend operational improvements.
- Experience participating in Joint Commission surveys, state inspections, or regulatory audits.
- Leadership capability to direct contractors and coordinate facility-related activities.
- Working knowledge of reliability-centered maintenance and continuous improvement methodologies
