What You'll Do as a Paramedic
-
Provide Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Life Support (ALS) during emergency and interfacility ground transports

Assess, monitor, and stabilize patients using advanced clinical skills and evidence-based treatment protocols
-
Administer medications, perform advanced airway management, cardiac monitoring, and other approved paramedic interventions in accordance with North Carolina OEMS and local protocols
-
Monitor patient conditions throughout transport and adjust treatment as needed to support optimal outcomes
-
Operate and maintain emergency vehicles and equipment while completing required safety inspections and documentation
-
Accurately document patient assessments, treatments, and transport information in accordance with regulatory and organizational standards
-
Communicate effectively with patients, families, physicians, nurses, dispatch personnel, and other healthcare professionals

Assist Emergency Department staff with patient care and departmental needs when not actively transporting patients

Maintain compliance with infection prevention, hazardous materials, safety, and organizational policies
-

Qualifications
Education
Experience
- Two (2) years of experience as a Paramedic in a pre-hospital ALS EMS service or critical care transport setting preferred
Licensure / Certification
-
Licensed Paramedic in the State of North Carolina

Basic Life Support (BLS) through the American Heart Association
-
Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS)
-
Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS)
-
Trauma certification preferred (ITLS, PHTLS, or TNCC)
-
Valid, unrestricted North Carolina Driver's License meeting organizational insurance requirements
-
Emergency Vehicle Driver Training certification required within one (1) year of hire
-
National Registry Paramedic certification preferred
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

Strong knowledge of advanced life support practices, emergency medical care, and patient stabilization
-
Ability to provide safe, effective care in high-pressure and rapidly changing situations
-
Experience with advanced monitoring, medication administration, and mechanical ventilation preferred

Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
-
Strong clinical judgment, critical thinking, and decision-making abilities

Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively with interdisciplinary healthcare teams

Commitment to patient safety, quality care, and professional accountability
Physical Demands

Ability to lift, transfer, push, and pull patients and equipment weighing 50 pounds or more

Frequent standing, walking, bending, kneeling, squatting, twisting, reaching, and climbing

Prolonged sitting while operating or riding in emergency vehicles

Frequent manual dexterity for patient care procedures and equipment operation
-
Visual acuity sufficient to assess patients, administer treatments, and operate medical equipment
Working Conditions

Fast-paced emergency medical services environment with frequent patient transport and emergency response responsibilities

Regular exposure to bloodborne pathogens, infectious diseases, hazardous materials, and other healthcare-related hazards

Frequent operation of emergency vehicles and specialized medical equipment

Schedule includes days, evenings, nights, weekends, holidays, and on-call or emergency response assignments as needed

Required adherence to North Carolina OEMS protocols, infection prevention standards, safety procedures, and UNC Health Appalachian policies
