Position Summary
The Human Resources Generalist is responsible for supporting the day-to-day operations of the Human Resources department by providing a broad range of HR services, including payroll, benefits administration, recruitment, onboarding, employee relations, HR compliance, and HRIS administration. This position serves as a trusted resource for employees and managers while ensuring HR processes are efficient, compliant, and aligned with the organization's mission of delivering exceptional emergency medical services.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Payroll & Compensation
- Process bi-weekly payroll for hourly and salaried employees.
- Review and audit employee time records for accuracy.
- Process payroll changes including new hires, status changes, promotions, and separations.
- Ensure accurate processing of overtime, shift differentials, specialty pay, and payroll deductions.
- Reconcile payroll reports and resolve discrepancies.
- Maintain payroll records in accordance with applicable laws and organizational policies.
Benefits Administration
- Administer medical, dental, vision, life, disability, and retirement benefit programs.
- Coordinate new hire enrollment and qualifying life event changes.
- Manage employee leave and benefit continuation processes.
- Coordinate annual Open Enrollment and employee benefit education.
- Serve as the primary point of contact for employee benefit questions.
- Reconcile monthly benefit invoices and payroll deductions.
Recruitment & Onboarding
- Coordinate recruitment activities including posting positions, scheduling interviews, conducting reference checks, and preparing employment offers.
- Facilitate onboarding for new employees from offer acceptance through orientation.
- Coordinate pre-employment requirements including background checks, credential verification, and onboarding documentation.
- Maintain applicant tracking system and onboarding workflows.
Employee Relations
- Respond to employee questions regarding HR policies, benefits, payroll, and employment practices.
- Assist with investigations, disciplinary documentation, and performance management processes.
- Support employee engagement and recognition initiatives.
- Maintain confidential employee records.
HR Compliance & Administration
- Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local employment laws.
- Assist with leave administration, unemployment claims, and workers' compensation documentation.
- Prepare reports and maintain HR metrics.
- Assist with policy updates and HR communications.
- Support HR audits and accreditation activities.
HR Systems
- Maintain employee information within the HRIS.
- Assist with system testing, process improvements, and reporting.
- Support implementation of new HR technologies and workflows.
- Generate HR reports and analytics as requested.
Other Duties
- Participate in special HR projects and organizational initiatives.
- Cross-train with other HR team members to ensure continuity of operations.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
Education
- Bachelor's degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, or related field preferred.
- Equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
Experience
- Three (3) years of progressively responsible Human Resources experience.
- Experience processing payroll and administering employee benefits required.
- Experience in healthcare, EMS, public safety, or other 24/7 operations preferred.
- Experience in a union environment preferred.
