Reports to the Pharmacy Manager. Under the clinical supervision of a licensed pharmacist and in accordance with established policies and procedures and legal and regulatory requirements, participates in any and all steps involved in dispensing medications to patients and patient care areas. Assists in maintaining supplies and files in the department.

Prepares pharmaceuticals for dispensing to patients and assists in delivery of pharmaceuticals to patient care areas by:
- Following approved aseptic technique, prepares intravenous admixtures.
- Packaging bulk products into unit-of-use packaging.
- Selecting from stock areas, medications for unit dose cassettes based on computer-generated Fill and Update Lists.
- Selecting from stock areas, medications for newly received patient and refill prescriptions based on computer-generated labels and verbal and written instructions.
- Mathematically calculating amounts or quantities of ingredients, weighing, measuring and mixing ingredients using such equipment as graduates, balances, mortars, pestles, and spatulas.
- Carrying prepared pharmaceuticals to all patient care areas and placing them in prescribed locations.
- Delivering medication carts to nursing units and exchanging cassettes on a daily basis.
Utilizes department computer system to establish patient profiles in the computer system for review by a licensed pharmacist and process patient charges and credits by:
- Reviewing the physician's order for completeness, referring questions and problems to a licensed pharmacist.
- Selecting appropriate choices for drug, route and times of administration, etc. and entering this information in the computer system.
- Validating and charging Fill and Update Lists using the department computer.
- Entering charges and credits into the department computer from proof-of-use documents.
Assists in maintaining pharmacy inventory by:
- Recording items with quantities below established minimum quantities for reorder by the Purchasing/Inventory Coordinator.
- Replenishing contents of various kits, trays, carts, etc., maintained for specialty areas.
- Performing robot stocking duties.
Participates in clinical patient reviews with department Clinical Pharmacists by:
- Participating in review of patient charts and discussing drug therapy.
- Assisting in dosage calculations for the pharmacokinetic dosing service.
- Assisting in data collection for adverse drug reaction report and medication use evaluation.
Supports the Pharmacy Department by:
- Performing inspections of assigned patient care areas using printed guidelines.
- Answering telephone calls and responding appropriately if qualified or authorized to do so.
- Participating in drug reviews.
- Assisting in developing and implementing new services.
Performs other functions to maintain personal competence and contribute to the overall effectiveness of the department by:
- Completing other job-related duties and projects as assigned.

- Completes mandatory education, annual competencies and department specific education within established timeframes.

- Maintains license/certification, registration in good standing throughout fiscal year.
- Direct patient care providers are required to maintain current BCLS (CPR) and other certifications as required by position/department.
- Consistently utilizes appropriate universal precautions, protective equipment, and ergonomic techniques to protect patient and self.
- Adheres to regulatory agency requirements, survey process and compliance.

- Available to work overtime in addition to working additional or other shifts and schedules when required.

Education and Experience
- The knowledge, skills and abilities as indicated below are normally acquired through the successful completion of a high school diploma, enrollment in the first professional year of the college pharmacy program at an accredited School of Pharmacy, familiarity with pharmaceutical concepts, and holds a valid State of Indiana pharmacy intern license.
Knowledge & Skills
- Requires a thorough knowledge of hospital pharmacy operations, including legal and regulatory requirements.
- Requires the mathematical skills necessary to accurately compute fractions, ratios, percentages and totals.
- Demonstrates the interpersonal and communication skills (both verbal and written), necessary to effectively interact with other hospital staff members.
