Position Summary
An exempt position with clinical and administrative duties within the Orthopedic Division. Clinical duties will remain consistent with current employed Physician Assistants in Orthopedics. Administrative duties will include, but not limited to, scheduling of Orthopedic PAs, evaluating performance, recruitment, and quality assurance.
Essential Functions and Responsibilities Includes the Following:
- Understands and adheres to the WPH Performance Standards, Policies and Behaviors.
- Creates and adjusts Orthopedic PAs work schedule to meet demand of patient care needs including approving/denying paid time off.
- Performs necessary evaluations on employed Orthopedic PAs.
- Involved with recruitment and on-boarding of PAs within the division of Orthopedics.
- Work with appropriate disciplines to assure quality assurance in the delivery of high quality care to patients with Orthopedic needs.
- Address “day to day” issues/concerns of PA staff, scheduling needs, and patient needs.
- Work closely with Administrative Director of PA Services, Orthopedic Practice Manager, Physicians, and staff to meet division goals.
- First Assist on surgical procedures.
- Facilitate the care of patients in the outpatient setting by assisting the Physician or autonomously assessing and treating patients within their Scope of Practice.
- Conducts physical exams, assesses health status, orders and interprets tests, prescribes medications, and treat illnesses including giving injections and suturing wounds. Consults with physicians as needed and refers to physicians for more complicated medical cases or cases that are not a routine part of a PA’s scope of work.
- Monitors therapies and provides continuity of care.
- Triages patient calls and evaluates patient problems. Responds to emergencies including use of CPR.
- Return patient phone calls back in a timely manner.
- Documents patient information and care in medical record, in confidential manner, and may maintain departmental statistical database for research purposes.
- Demonstrates knowledge of medical model and roles of physicians and physician assistants.
- Familiar with anatomy, pharmacology, pathophysiology, clinical medicine and physical diagnosis of conditions that they treat.
- Demonstrates skill in gathering and analyzing physiological, socioeconomic, and emotional patient data.
- Demonstrates skill in accurately evaluating patient problems in person or via phone and providing appropriate advice, intervention, or referral.
- Demonstrates ability to make responsible decisions within scope of PA practice.
- Demonstrates ability to collaborate effectively with physicians on complicated cases.
- Demonstrates ability to educate patients, families and staff in user-friendly manner.
- Demonstrates ability to demonstrate eye-hand coordination, full range of motion, and manual dexterity.
- Performs all other related duties as assigned.
Education & Experience Requirements

- Current New York State Licensed Physician Assistant.
- Current National Certification.

- Current White Plains Hospital Physician Assistant Collaborative Practice Agreement.
- Current Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification.
- Proficiency in all procedures, techniques and skills approved in the delineation of privileges

Physical/Mental Demands/Requirements & Work Environment
- May be exposed to chemicals necessary to perform required tasks. Any hazardous chemicals the employee may be exposed to are listed in the hospital’s SDS (Safety Data Sheet) data base and may be accessed through the hospital’s Intranet site (Employee Tools/SDS Access). A copy of the SDS data base can also be found at the hospital switchboard, saved on a disc.
- Must be able to move about the department and Hospital most of the shift or remain in a stationary position for long periods
- Must be able to position self to assess, assist and treat patients who have a wide variety of limitations, injuries or illnesses
- Must be able to perform a wide range of clinical procedures as outlined in the delineation of privileges and operate a wide variety of office and clinical equipment and tools
- Must position self to examine patients lying on a bed or seated, reach for equipment which is positioned in high or low places in the room,
- Must be able to detect and perceive symptoms of a wide range of patient medical conditions and observe and judge the effectiveness of treatments and interventions.
- Must have good mathematical and communication (written/verbal) skills. Must be able to communicate with a wide variety of patients, co-workers, family members, hospital personnel, and others.
- Must be able to maintain legible and thorough documentation of patient care.

Salary range: $160,000 - $210,000 based on full time employment
