Job Summary
The Billing Manager is responsible for leading AET's enterprise-wide billing operations, ensuring accurate, timely, and contract-compliant invoicing aligned with project accounting standards and client expectations. This role manages and develops the billing team, drives process consistency and operational efficiency, and partners with Finance, Project Services, and operational leadership to support financial performance and client service objectives.
Serving as a key operational leader within Project Services, the Billing Manager owns billing performance, escalation resolution, and cross-functional coordination. This position plays a central role in strengthening operational scalability, advancing process and system improvements, and maintaining a high standard of accountability and continuous improvement across the organization.

- Lead enterprise-wide billing operations to ensure accurate, timely, and contract-compliant invoicing aligned with operational and client expectations.
- Partner with the VP of Project Services, Finance, Project Accounting, and operational leadership to inform and execute billing strategy, workflow optimization, and cross-functional coordination.
- Drive consistency, accountability, and efficiency across billing operations by establishing priorities, monitoring workloads, and reinforcing operational standards and best practices.
- Review, approve, and resolve complex or high-risk billing scenarios, including invoicing discrepancies, contract interpretation issues, and client-specific billing requirements.
- Serve as a key escalation point for complex billing inquiries, sensitive client concerns, and operational issues requiring elevated support or decision-making.
- Lead, coach, and develop billing team members through performance management, training, mentorship, workload balancing, and professional development initiatives.
- Analyze billing workflows, cycle times, backlog, and performance metrics to identify trends, risks, and inefficiencies.
- Develop and implement process improvements, automation opportunities, and operational changes to improve billing accuracy, turnaround times, and team effectiveness.
- Collaborate with cross-functional partners to resolve billing issues, strengthen communication, and improve coordination and client experience.
- Ensure billing activities comply with company policies, internal controls, contractual, and applicable regulations while supporting audit, revenue recognition, and reporting activities.
- Develop and maintain reporting on billing performance, invoicing activity, and team productivity to support operational decision-making and continuous improvement.
- Research industry trends, system enhancements, and billing best practices to inform operational strategy and identify opportunities for improvement.
- Perform related duties as assigned.
Supervisory Responsibility
- Directly lead, mentor, and develop billing team members to ensure accurate and timely execution of billing processes and adherence to operational standards.
- Provide guidance, training, and operational support to cross-functional stakeholders on billing processes, invoicing practices, and workflow expectations.
Qualifications and Education Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or a related field, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- 7+ years of experience in billing, project, accounts receivable, or related operational finance functions, including 3+ years of leadership or supervisory experience.
- Demonstrated experience managing complex billing operations, leading process improvements, and supporting operational or organizational change initiatives.
- Strong understanding of billing operations, invoicing practices, financial controls, project-based accounting workflows, and contract requirements.
- Strong leadership, organizational, analytical, and problem-solving skills with the ability to manage competing priorities in a fast-paced environment.
- Proficiency with ERP or billing systems, reporting tools, and operational or financial data analysis.
Preferred Skills
- Experience in engineering, consulting, construction, or other complex, high-volume, project-based professional services environments.
- Experience supporting operational transformation initiatives, workflow automation, or large-scale process improvement efforts.
- Advanced Excel, reporting, and operational data analysis skills.
- Experience developing operational metrics, dashboards, or workflow reporting to support business decision-making.
Pay Transparency
Base compensation is expected to be in the range of $85,000.00 and $105,000.00 annually based on skill set and experience. The selected candidate must be authorized to work for any employer in the U.S. without requiring visa sponsorship now or in the future.
Work Environment
This job primarily operates in a professional office environment. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, and filing cabinets. The position offers a hybrid work schedule in accordance with AET’s hybrid work policy, provided that daily responsibilities do not require onsite presence.
