Beacon Health System is hiring a PRN night shift Unit Assistant position for our Pediatric Unit at Beacon Memorial Hospital in South Bend, IN.
Type: PRN/FTE 0.01 (Hours vary; a minimum of 24 hours is required every 6 weeks)

Shift Details: 12 hour shift, 7-7am with rotating weekends & holidays

What You’ll Do
You’ll report to the Director of Patient Care Services and support the unit by welcoming guests, answering telephones, relaying information, and performing a variety of clerical and administrative duties. Under the direction of a Registered Nurse, you’ll provide designated patient care services, with specific responsibilities determined by your assigned patient care unit. Your role will adapt to unit needs and may include a range of supportive tasks that contribute to efficient operations, effective communication, and high-quality patient care.
Unit Assistant Job Responsibilities

Greets visitors, patients, physicians, and staff in a professional, courteous, and welcoming manner.

Prepares and maintains patient charts for admissions, transfers, discharges, and surgical procedures.

Transcribes and enters physician orders, clinical data, charges, and patient status updates accurately into the computer system.

Assists with patient admissions and discharges, including room setup, patient orientation, and collection of basic patient information.

Provides basic patient care such as bathing, oral hygiene, bed-making, room organization, and ongoing comfort measures.

Assists patients with mobility needs including turning, positioning, transferring, ambulating, and range-of-motion exercises using proper techniques.

Takes and records vital signs, weights, intake and output, and responds promptly to patient call lights.

Performs skin care, wound care, and patient care treatments and procedures as directed by a Registered Nurse, documenting observations appropriately.

Assists with and performs clinical procedures such as catheter care, glucose monitoring, specimen collection, suctioning, and monitoring devices under RN direction.

Observes, reports, and follows up on patient condition changes, concerns, complaints, or unusual behaviors to the nursing team.

Supports unit operations by transporting patients, maintaining supplies and equipment, and ensuring patient care and work areas remain clean, organized, and safe.

You demonstrate flexibility and teamwork by assisting with admissions, discharges, and a wide range of patient care activities under the direction of a Registered Nurse. You bring the physical ability, technical skills, and sound judgment needed to support patient mobility, nutrition, hygiene, and monitoring. You uphold professionalism, confidentiality, and infection prevention standards while responding promptly to patient needs, reporting changes in condition, and contributing to a clean, safe, and well-organized care environment.

Previous patient care experience.

A Nurse Assistant certification.

Must obtain Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS/CPR) within 3 months of hire and maintain certification.
