Reporting to: Director of Thermofluids Engineering
Your role in the mission:
The Thermofluids Engineer will be responsible for designing, analyzing, and validating thermal system architectures in the stellarator core. This role requires expertise in thermodynamics, heat transfer, and fluid dynamics, as well as experience performing analytical and numerical evaluations with emphasis on analyses of power cycles. The ideal candidate is highly collaborative, detail-oriented, and comfortable working in a fast-paced R&D environment. You will also:
- Perform analytical thermodynamic, fluid dynamics, and heat transfer calculations on the Infinity Two stellarator to support design and performance evaluation.
- Set up process models to evaluate the performance of a fusion pilot plant with various combinations of operating temperatures, heat flows.
- Ability to perform exergy analyses to compare the performance of various thermodynamic cycle options compatible with a fusion machine.
- Develop and maintain system-level thermal/fluid models to inform design decisions.
- Develop and maintain appropriate documentation for this effort.
- Interface with external engineering firm serving as the point of contact for balance of plant design activities.
What you’ll need:
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or related field.
- Demonstrated experience in analytical thermodynamics, heat transfer, and fluid dynamics calculations.
- Experience performing analytical numerical analysis of thermal/fluid systems using tools such as REFPROP, GASPAK, HePAK, ASPEN HYSYS or similar process engineering softwares.
- Understanding of thermodynamic process design principles to offer insights into thermal system architecture decisions.
- Strong problem-solving skills and ability to work cross-functionally in a collaborative engineering environment.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Preferred
- Master’s or Ph.D. in a relevant engineering discipline.
- Experience with cryogenic systems for superconducting magnets, fusion devices, particle accelerators, or space systems.
- Familiarity with nuclear systems and/or power plants is a bonus.
- Experience in system-level modeling, controls integration, and data analysis.
- Ability to own and execute on multiple projects.
- Experience in a fast-paced R&D or startup environment.
