JOB SUMMARY: The Foundational Skills Tutor provides targeted, research‑based academic support to non‑traditional and adult learners in the areas of foundational reading (including phonemic and phonetic recognition) and essential mathematics. The tutor delivers individualized and small‑group instruction designed to strengthen core academic skills, build learner confidence, and promote steady progress aligned with the instructional objectives, and student success standards.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:Provide individualized and small‑group tutoring in foundational reading, phonics, and core math concepts to support non-traditional and adult learners.Create and maintain a supportive, culturally responsive learning environment that promotes engagement, academic risk‑taking, and positive behavior.Communicate proactively with students to schedule sessions, provide reminders, and encourage consistent participation.Monitor, document, and analyze student academic progress; share updates with instructional staff and school leadership as required.Assist students in navigating and using instructional technology, including literacy and math software.Maintain accurate records of student attendance, participation, assessments, and progress toward goals.Build positive, professional relationships with students, families, and staff to promote a strong support system for learner success.Collaborate with teachers, interventionists, and support personnel to reinforce learning goals, accommodations, and intervention plans.Uphold confidentiality of student records and adhere to all school, district, and FERPA policies.Identify safety, behavioral, or wellness concerns and report them promptly to appropriate school personnel.Participate in required training sessions, professional development, meetings, and coaching supports.Demonstrate professionalism, ethical conduct, punctuality, and reliability at all times.Perform other duties related to student support and instructional programming as assigned.

JOB QUALIFICATIONS:Associate’s degree or higher from an accredited college or university required.Experience working in adult education, alternative education, or with at‑risk or non-traditional learners preferred.Strong written and verbal communication skills.Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and basic educational technology tools.Bilingual skills (English/Spanish or English/Arabic) preferred.Ability to collaborate effectively with students, families, and staff in a positive and professional manner.Demonstrated ability to teach and support learners from diverse cultural, linguistic, and socio‑economic backgrounds.Experience in conflict resolution and supporting students with academic and behavioral challenges.Valid Michigan driver’s license and reliable transportation to travel to locations as needed.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: The physical demands described are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this position. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to see, talk and hear. The employee is frequently required to stand, walk, sit for extended periods of time, and have sufficient hand, arm, and finger dexterity to operate a phone, computer keyboard, and other office equipment. Must be able to lift a minimum of 10 pounds.
WORK ENVIRONMENT: The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. -This job operates in a normal school environment with a noise level, which is at times moderately loud with little discomfort due to noise, dirt, dust and the like. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets and fax machines.
