The Licensed Practical Nurse in Surgical Services provides direct patient care and clinical support across the surgical continuum including Pre-Surgical testing, Day Surgery and Post-Surgical Unit. The LPN works under the supervision of a Registered Nurse (RN) and/or physician to ensure safe, efficient, and compassionate patient care before and after surgical procedures. The role focuses on patient preparation, monitoring, documentation, education and coordination of care to promote optimal surgical outcomes.

Performs initial assessment of patient vitals, documents all patient related clinical information, i.e., vitals; assesses patient for special needs and plans appropriate intervention, i.e., dietary, social service and psycho-social distress management. Comprehensive review of the patient's medical history is performed and documented.

Follows established nursing plan of care to assess patients, note compliance, and report changes in patient condition to the RN or provider to ensure prompt intervention when needed.

Supports departmental quality improvement initiatives and patient safety goals.

Assists with patient preparation for surgical procedures including verification of patient identity, procedure, consent documentation, and completion of required preoperative checklist.

Performs clinical tasks within scope of practice including EKGs, specimen collection, point-of care testing, wound observation, and monitoring patient status.

Demonstrates professionalism, teamwork, and adherence to the organization’s mission, values, and coworker compact.
