Position Information
Under the direction of a Police Lieutenant, the Police Sergeant supervises Police Officers and civilan employees of the department and ensures the effective operation of assigned personnel while maintaining the established chain of command. The Sergeant directs law enforcement operations and oversees the day-to-day activities of sworn and civilian staff to ensure compliance with department policies and procedures, regulations, orders, and applicable laws. This position provides leadership and direct supervision to an assigned unit, enforcing standards of conduct and performance expectations. The Sergeant inspects and evaluates the work of subordinates; provides ongoing coaching, mentoring, and performance feedback; conducts formal performance evaluations; and coordinates or delivers training to support professional development. The Sergeant takes appropriate corrective or disciplinary action when necessary to safeguard employee welfare, uphold departmental integrity, and ensure community safety. In the absence of a higher-ranking officer, the Sergeant assumes command responsibility. The position also requires performing patrol functions and other collateral duties as assigned.Please note that University of California career employees who have passed their probationary period will receive priority consideration for this position. If a qualified pool of internal candidates is not identified, qualified external candidates may be considered at the discretion of the hiring department. The full salary range for the Police Sergeant is $141,524.64 - $181,301.04 annually. We base salary offers on a variety of considerations, such as education, licensure and certifications, experience, and other business and organizational needs.Applicants must have current work authorization when accepting a UCR staff position. Currently, we are unable to sponsor or take over sponsorship of an employment Visa for staff.As a University employee, you will be required to comply with all applicable University policies and/or collective bargaining agreements, as may be amended from time to time. Federal, state, or local government directives may impose additional requirements.
