Surgical Nurse Navigator - RN
This position will be split between pre-admit testing & surgery as needed.
The Surgical Nurse Navigator performs a variety of clinical duties relevant to the preparation and scheduling of surgical procedures. This role functions as part of a multidisciplinary team acting as an advocate and educator for patients and families while working to ensure that all are prepared for the day of surgery. Specific tasks include: coordination of pre-admission testing (involving labs, EKG, x-ray, stress test, etc.), delivery of pre-procedure education, and facilitation of patient flow. Incumbent is knowledgeable of treatment plans, governing policies, medications, and individual patient plan of care. They conduct performance in accordance with the standards of professional nursing practice and responsibilities as outlined in the Registered Nurse job description. The registered nurse is individually responsible and accountable for maintaining professional competencies.
Duties/Responsibilities:
- Fosters supportive and professional partnerships with patients, clinical staff, and health care providers to ensure confidence in services and an in-depth understanding of surgical procedures.
- Navigates patients through the care continuum, helping to eliminate barriers and enhance satisfaction.
- Coordinates pre-admission testing (involving labs, EKG, x-ray, stress test, etc.) Follows up on results, notifying the appropriate personnel of any pertinent patient information as related to surgical procedures.
- Provides comprehensive pre-operative education aimed at improving patient understanding and decreasing risk of surgical complications. Outlines steps in the surgical procedure, post-operative care, and general expectations.
- Monitors patient progress through the pre-operative phase to ensure compliance with clinical requirements and provide guidance on surgical readiness.
- Maintains confidentiality when interacting with patients, families, personnel, and the general public.
- Demonstrates proficient use of informatics and technology utilized in nursing service. Utilizes the technology and equipment to document accurate information for use of the nursing process in the provider of quality patient care.
- Assesses learning needs of the patient/family; plans, provides, evaluates & documents patient/family education.
- Documents learning needs and teaching methods used to provide patient and family with learning resources.
Education:
Graduate from an Associate level Registered Nurse Program (ADN). BSN preferred
Experience:
Minimum of one year experience within an acute care facility. Previous experience in Surgical Services required
Licensure/Certification:
Must hold a current license from the Kentucky Board of Nursing as a Registered Nurse
