The Exus Development Department is seeking a Grid Integration and Reliability Modeling Intern focused on Renewable Energy and Data Center Energy Systems as part of our Summer 2026 internship program at our corporate headquarters in Pittsburgh, PA. This is a paid position with an anticipated duration of approximately eight weeks between June and August 2026. Start and end dates are flexible to accommodate each candidate’s academic schedule. The role offers the potential to transition into a full-time position upon graduation.
The successful candidate will work under the supervision of the Vice President of Transmission and the Vice President of Technical Operations will collaborate closely with development project directors and managers to support a range of strategic and technical initiatives.
Essential Duties
- Learn and apply commercial interconnection and power system analysis tools such as PowerWorld and Pearl Street.
- Develop reliability assessment models for various electrical infrastructure configurations supporting renewable energy projects and data center energy supply systems.
- Perform grid interconnection data analysis, including power flow and optimal power flow (OPF) studies in PowerWorld, to support interconnection screening and risk assessment for assigned projects, with consideration of anticipated grid congestion and interconnection cluster trends
- Gain familiarity with OATT tariffs governing large generator interconnection across RTOs/ISOs/TPs (e.g., PJM, MISO, ISO-NE, SPP, PNM, BPA), and track progress of Generator Interconnection Reform (i2X) initiatives under FERC Orders and related regulatory rulings.
- Develop an understanding of the renewable energy project lifecycle, including project development, interconnection studies, and electrical design processes.
Experience and Education Requirements
- Currently enrolled in an accredited college or university as a graduate student in Electrical Engineering; coursework or research in power system reliability and optimization is preferred.
- Ability to work on-site at the Exus Corporate Headquarters in downtown Pittsburgh, PA for the duration of the internship program.
- Motivated and detail-oriented with a strong interest in renewable energy development and grid integration.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
- Knowledge of steady-state power flow analysis; prior academic or project experience using analytical tools such as PowerWorld is preferred.
- Familiarity with optimization methods (e.g., Linear Programming) is a plus.
- Interest in exploring complex industry processes involving uncertainty and real-world constraints.
- Strong attention to detail and accuracy, with an analytical mindset and solid quantitative skill set.
- Team player with enthusiasm for learning, pushing technical boundaries, and developing solutions to complex technical challenges.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to gather information, conduct analyses, prepare reports, and present findings to company management.
