Summary for Zodiac Captain
Requires a USCG Master’s license (25-ton minimum) and an FCC Marine Radio Operator’s Permit (MROP). Prior experience in the marine tourism industry, and particularly on passenger vessels in desirable. Preference is given to applicants with knowledge of outboard engine maintenance and electrical systems. Must be able to build team and maintain crew morale to provide a quality experience for guests and employees alike.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities for Zodiac Captain
- Conduct tours a directed according to descriptions in sales literature and procedures in policy manual. Supervise all aspects of tour delivery and quality.
- Manage and direct crew members in the execution of all job duties; build productive and efficient team; maintain high morale over the season.
- Supervise and assist in daily maintenance: cleaning and fuel pumping. Coordinate and assist with daily maintenance: cleaning vessel, pumping fuel, etc. Coordinate and assist with routine maintenance (filter changes, oil changes, etc.).
- Communicate with Port Engineer to identify problems and expedite repairs. Assist as needed.
- Supervise passenger boarding, safety/orientation demonstration, emergency response and crowd control.
- Plan and execute emergency drills, equipment checks and safety meetings in accordance with U.S. Coast Guard Regulations and AMT policy.
- Maintain all navigational equipment in good working order; keep logs and ship/company documents as directed. Provide daily operations report to office.
- Special projects may be assigned as required by the business.
Minimum Qualifications for Zodiac Captain
- Master 25-ton license, minimum.
- Mechanical aptitude, engine room experience preferred. Outboard mechanics or electrical/electronics background helpful.
- Must be able to team build and maintain morale with crew.
- Must be able to provide commentary to guests.
- Must be able to conduct USCG drills.
- Valid US driver’s license and a clean driving record.
- Must pass a security background check and DOT drug test.
Preferred Qualifications for Zodiac Captain
- Experience on passenger carrying vessels.
- Experience operating vessels in Southeast Alaska preferred.
- Experience in the travel, tourism or outdoor recreation industries.

- Include moderate to loud noise levels, all weather conditions, frequent use of required protective clothing including raingear, ear protection and life preserver.
