📍 Location: Medical Supply Store – UI Health Care, Iowa City
🕓 Schedule: Full-time | 8:30 AM – 6:00 PM | Rotating shifts/weekends
As a Durable Medical Equipment (DME) Representative, you’ll play a vital role in ensuring patients receive the medical equipment and supplies they need for a safe and seamless transition home. Working directly with physicians, patients, insurance providers, and internal teams, you’ll coordinate DME activities in full compliance with UI Health Care and regulatory standards—making a direct impact on the quality of patient care.
The Durable Medical Equipment Representative provides support to ensure seamless coordination and compliance of home-going Durable Medical Equipment (DME) within the University of Iowa Hospitals and affiliated clinics. This position collaborates one-on-one with physicians, customers, employees, and management to coordinate all DME activities in accordance with legal and UIHC standards.
Position Responsibilities |
- Ensures all documentation conforms with payer requirements, standard operating procedures, and compliance programs.
- Verifies insurance and obtains prior authorizations as needed.
- Establishes and maintains effective channels of communication and a professional relationship with patients, physicians, co-workers, contractors, and outside facilities.
- Processes internal/external orders from the hospital(s), such as affiliated clinics and facilities.
- Utilizes Electronic Medical Record (EMR), reference guides, and other resources to process order(s).
- Utilizes payor policy information located on websites and initiates payor changes in a timely manner to maintain knowledge of compliance with payor and regulatory standards.Â
- Addresses patient concerns/satisfaction, while performing/assisting with patient education.
- Assist with inventory control such as resupplying stock.
- Open and close the store, including managing cash flow and processing payments accurately in the billing software.
- Assists with training and onboarding new teammates.
- Ensure end-of-day reconciliations are complete and accurate.Â
- Ability to exercise initiative, and techniques to solve problems in a variety of situations. Â
Education and Experience Requirements |
- High School Diploma (or GED Equivalent).
- Valid driver’s license and proof of liability insurance coverage.
Desired Qualifications and Experience |
- Associate’s degree or equivalent work experience in the healthcare field. (Majors in biology, kinesiology, exercise science, and nursing are highly desirable)
- Brightree and Epic software experience.Â
- Knowledge of Durable Medical Equipment.Â
- Experience in cash handling and recording.Â
- Experience working with insurance benefits and physician’s offices.Â
Required Skills and Abilities |
- Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite.
- Effective interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills. Excellent telephone skills.
- Possess a working knowledge of common office equipment.Â
- Demonstration of organizational skills to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
- Ability to collaborate with coworkers and the community at large.Â
- Demonstrate the ability to type with minimal error.Â
- Must be able to work with minimal supervision/high autonomy.Â
- Ability to stand for extended periods of time at a counter, fine motor coordination /dexterity necessary for typing, etc.
- Occasional lifting greater than 50lbs.
- Walking, lifting, reaching, stooping, and bending.

- Successful completion of a background check.Â
- Successful completion of reference checks.Â
- Proof of eligibility to work in the United States. Â
Expected Work Hours and Location |
Generally, 8:30 am to 6:00 pm with rotating shifts and/or weekends. Days and hours are subject to change with notice.Â
