Job Summary:
A medical laboratory scientist (MLS), also known as a medical technologist or clinical laboratory scientist, plays a crucial role in healthcare by performing various laboratory tests and analysis to aid in diagnosing, treating, and preventing diseases. This role at the moment is part-time hours in the am. Weekends included based on need.
Responsibilities:
- Medical Laboratory Scientist performs laboratory tests on patient samples, such as blood, urine, tissue, and other bodily fluids.
- Preparation of samples for analysis by separating components, such as plasma or serum, and maintaining the integrity of the specimens.
- Provide end-user insights to inform continuous improvement of laboratory testing processes in the collaboration with laboratory leadership.
- Maintenance and performance of strict quality control measures within the laboratory.
- Medical Laboratory Scientist ensures that instruments are calibrated and operating correctly.
- Performs routine maintenance, troubleshoots issues, and validates test results' accuracy and precision.
- Participated in proficiency testing as assigned and needed.
- Medical Laboratory Scientist analyze and interpret the results patient test results.
- Compare the findings with established reference ranges, identify abnormalities, and accurately repot the results to clinical care providers.
- Participate in new instrument validations with data collection and preliminary data analysis (descriptive statistics).
- Communication of critical values and appropriate documentation.
- Understand and apply the laboratory QMS plan in performing duties and interpreting quality control results/quality assurance processes.
- Maintain proficiency in operating and maintaining all laboratory instruments.
- Maintain a current understanding of advancements in technology and laboratory techniques to enhance the efficiency and accuracy of testing procedures.
- Utilize laboratory information systems to enter and retrieve patient data, track specimens, generate reports, and manage laboratory workflow.
- Medical Laboratory Scientist ensures proper documentation and adherence to privacy regulations.
- Communicate effectively to discuss test results, interpret findings, and provide additional information.
- May engage in research activities, participate in studies, or contribute to developing new laboratory tests, methodologies, and procedures.
- Medical Laboratory Scientist may also be involved in evaluating and implementing new laboratory technologies.
- Follow and inform strict safety protocols to minimize the risk of exposure to hazardous materials and infectious agents.
- Remain current on relevant regulatory guidelines and adhere to them to ensure compliance with regulatory requirements and laboratory policies and procedures.
- Demonstrate a commitment to continuous learning and professional development.
- Medical Laboratory Scientist may develop and present educational information on behalf of the company and in vendor education events.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in CLIA laboratory science (e.g., Medical Technology, Medical Laboratory Sciences, Biology, Chemistry, Biochemistry, Molecular Biology).
- Graduation from a NAACLS-approved MLS Program Preferred
- Graduated from an NAACLS accredited University either Bachelor's or Master's degree if you do not hold an MLS certification
- Previous clinical laboratory experience, working in a CLIA-certified (Moderate or High) complexity laboratory preferred.
- Ability to work alone and self-direct in a sometimes fast paced, and sometimes slow-paced environment.
- Strong knowledge of laboratory workflow and clinical laboratory testing processes.
- Strong technical skills, including experience with laboratory information systems.
- Excellent problem-solving and analytical skills to identify and resolve testing issues.
- Effective communication skills to interact with diverse stakeholders, including laboratory staff, physicians, mid-level providers, nursing staff, IT professionals, and vendors.
- Effective communication skills, both written and verbal.
- Attention to detail and ability to work in a fast-paced environment while managing multiple priorities.
- Flexibility, adaptability, and a willingness to take on diverse challenges and additional duties.
Physical Requirements:
- This role is primarily based in a clinical laboratory setting. Some exposure to biohazardous materials is expected.
- Ability to stand or sit for long periods of time and lift up to 30 pounds.
- Willingness to work flexible hours, including weekends as necessary.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and manage multiple priorities simultaneously.
- Good hand-eye coordination, visual sharpness, and the dexterity needed to operate medical lab equipment.
- Bending and Reaching: Flexibility is needed to bend and reach for supplies and using laboratory equipment.
- Infection Control: Strict adherence to infection control protocols and proper use of PPE are required.
