Job Summary
To provide a high level of professional quality patient care in a safe environment for the pregnant and lactating patient and her family in a timely and accurate manner. To evaluate and implement methods of meeting the education needs of childbearing families and perinatal staff.
Position Requirements
Formal Education / Training:
1. Certified Lactation Consultant or equivalent desired.
2. Training in Childbirth Education or equivalent experience – certification encouraged.
3. Current Tennessee license required.
4. BLS with 90 days of hire
5. Earned a nursing diploma or degree from a college or university.
Workplace Experience:
Perinatal Education and lactation support in both Inpatient and Outpatient Settings.
Equipment and Skills Training:
Meditech Computer System, Breast Pump and Supplies, Speaker Phone, Television, VCR, and other related AV Equipment.
Physical Environment:
Perinatal Department, Williamson Medical Center Classrooms, Outpatient Settings as approved by Williamson Medical Center.
Physical Effort:
1. Must be able to communicate in English verbally and legibly.
2. Able to stand/work for up to twelve hours a day.
3. Able to lift up to 250 lbs. with assistance.
Key Results
1. Performs an assessment on all breast-feeding patients utilizing skills of observation, communication and examination; including data obtained from patient, family and other members of the healthcare team.
2. Plans the patient’s care on an individual basis, identifying problems/needs, nursing diagnosis, standards of care/practice, interventions consistent with identified problems and attainable outcomes.
3. Plans for patient teaching, discharge and post discharge needs as appropriate for patient population.
4. Assist in the identification, planning, and implementation of education opportunities in an inpatient setting as well as through community health projects.
5. Functions independently with treatments, procedures and equipment appropriate to areas evidence by adherence to policy, procedure and competency based assessment and no pattern or trend of problem.
6. Handles/ transports/ stores/ prepares/ administers medications/ solutions safely and in accordance with hospital and departmental policies and procedures.
7. Documents accurately and timely.
8. Delivers appropriate educational information to new expectant parents to better their understanding of the obstetrical process (including postpartum and newborn care) in community classes, promoting WMC standards and philosophy.
9. Reassess patient’s condition, evaluate response and modify plan of care accordingly and in a timely manner.
10. Demonstrates responsibility for assigned communications, unit duties and special assignments.
11. Maintains healing and therapeutic environment for the patient and family.
12. Maintains position specific qualifications. Attends mandatory/in-services and staff meetings.
13. Maintains personal appearance in a way that reflects our professionalism and demonstrates to our patients, visitors and co-workers the importance we place on cleanliness, orderliness, and safety.
