We are seeking a Scientific Writer/Editor for an ad hoc contract opportunity with FM Talent Source for one of our valued clients. This work will be remote.
Essential Responsibilities & Duties
- Coordinate with the customer contact for input into editing and writing assignments.
- Have thorough knowledge of the Associated Press Stylebook, be familiar with federal plain language guidelines, and follow the customer writing style guide.
- Follow the customer's writing style guide as well as the citation style of the journal Environmental Health Perspectives unless otherwise instructed.
- Have intermediate advanced skills with Microsoft Word. Mark assigned text using "Track Changes" and other features of this software.
- Critically read and refine articles and other content. Edit each assigned document according to the level of effort specified by the customer. The required effort may range from proofreading and copyediting to substantive editing that includes or considers fact checking, clarity, flow. and cohesion.
- Check for the accurate spelling of names, professional titles, scientific terms, and scientific citations and references.
- Plan and carry out assigned tasks on time.
- As necessary, meetings may be conducted in person on customer campus in Research Triangle Park, North Carolina, or virtually. Keep the customer contact appraised or progress to include any challenges or barriers encountered.
- Develop story content ideas, considering audience appeal.
- Confer with customer staff members regarding desired emphasis in developing news stories or other types of content.
- Compile, organize, and analyze information provided by customer subject matter experts, as well as the customer grantees.
- Find trustworthy background information on scientific topics.
- Review, synthesize, and summarize scientific literature.
- Conduct interviews with subject matter experts to obtain quotes and clarification of complex information.
- Write materials, articles, stories, brochures, fact sheets and webpage content, in English or in Spanish, that incorporate the most current scientific research and information about the customer's activities and programs.
- Anticipate that some content may require rewriting to reflect changing needs, new information, or subject matter expert review.
Qualifications & Requirements
- Bachelor's degree with 10+ years' experience.
- Knowledge and experience implementing the Associated Press Stylebook.
- Ability with and experience implementing Federal Plain Language Guidelines.
- Ability to handle varying writing and editing tasks on a monthly basis.
- Ability and experience with Copyediting Scientific Articles.
- Experience in researching, organizing, and analyzing current scientific information.
- Skilled and experienced with Microsoft Word, data verification, information presentation, and identification of images, illustrations, or photos.
