Overview:
The Director of Acute Care Services is a key nursing leadership position responsible for overseeing the delivery of high-quality, patient-centered care on the Medical/Surgical and Intensive Care Units, as well as Respiratory Therapy. This role provides both clinical and administrative leadership, ensuring the planning, development, implementation, and evaluation of nursing services align with hospital standards, nursing best practices, and regulatory requirements. Working closely with clinical leads, nursing staff, physicians, and ancillary departments, the Director promotes excellence in care, operational efficiency, and interdisciplinary collaboration.
Key Responsibilities:
Clinical & Operational Leadership:
- Oversees daily operations of the Med/Surg, ICU, and Respiratory Therapy departments
- Ensures evidence-based, cost-effective, and patient-centered care is delivered 24/7
- Conducts routine rounding and collaborates with staff, patients, families, and physicians
- Maintains high visibility as a clinical and administrative resource for nursing personnel
- Coordinates and chairs ICU Multidisciplinary Committee meetings
Staff Development & Management:
- Interviews, hires, orients, and evaluates nursing staff performance
- Assures appropriate patient assignments based on staff competencies and patient needs
- Fosters an environment of accountability, education, and engagement
- Conducts staff meetings and promotes professional development opportunities
- Encourages shared governance and staff input in operational planning and decision-making
Strategic Planning & Compliance:
- Develops unit goals, objectives, policies, and standards aligned with hospital mission
- Prepares and manages departmental budgets and resource planning
- Collaborates with clinical instructors to support nursing student rotations
- Ensures compliance with infection control, safety standards, and clinical documentation protocols
Quality Improvement & Evaluation:
- Leads quality improvement initiatives and participates in hospital-wide efforts
- Monitors clinical performance metrics and patient outcomes
- Oversees the development and implementation of individualized plans of care
- Uses data analysis to support continuous improvement and best practices
Qualifications:
Education:
- Graduate of an accredited School of Nursing
- Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) required
- Master’s degree in Nursing, Healthcare Administration, or a related field preferred
- Current New York State Registered Nurse (RN) license and registration required
- BLS, ACLS, and PALS certifications required
Experience:
- Minimum of five (5) years of acute care clinical nursing experience
- At least three (3) years of demonstrated hospital supervisory or administrative experience

Physical Demands & Working Conditions:
- Requires standing and walking for the majority of the shift
- Occasional lifting and patient handling
- Possible exposure to unpleasant odors, communicable diseases, and potential injuries associated with patient care and medical equipment
