GENERAL SUMMARY:
The Inpatient Behavioral Health/Medical Detox Manager provides clinical and administrative leadership for inpatient behavioral health. Oversees the treatment of patients with emotional, mental, substance use disorder, or psychological disorders. Managers the activities of behavioral health and Medical Detox services. Ensures all behavioral health operations are in compliance with clinical guidelines. The manager is responsible for supporting and coordinating the mental and physical health care of patients on assigned units.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:
Clinical Responsibilities
Establishes and updates written policies and procedures to guide staff practice.
Assesses the care needs of patients; provides consultation to staff as needed.
Engages in joint collaborative practice activities with physicians and other health care team members to devise and implement strategies for quality improvement in-patient care services and profitability. Assures that measures are implemented.
Proactively elicits feedback from patient and/or family, and other health care team members regarding care delivery.
Investigates service complaints promptly and provides follow up information to involved staff or customer and supervisor.
Implements, in a timely manner, corrective action plans or developments regarding identified deficiencies in staff or unit performance. Monitors performance with QA tools and shares results with staff.
Promotes unit/ department culture of patient safety in staff meetings and by acting as a role model. Monitors compliance and for safety risks.
Staff Development
Interviews and hires qualified candidates for employment.
Assures unit specific orientation is implemented and documented. Provides constructive feedback, coaching and support to new hires.
Consults with Clinical Education Professional Practice Department and available clinical resources in an effort to provide relevant learning opportunities for staff.
Provides counseling and direction to staff as needed to maximize individual and team performance. Corrects or improves staff performance, including progressive discipline.
Conducts performance appraisals according to standards on a timely basis.
Unit/Service Management:
Develops annual goals and objectives for the area. Communicates progress towards goal achievement.
Participates in budget planning and prepares area budget. Utilizes input from appropriate others i.e., Medical Director, staff etc.
Exercises cost control by using all available data provided to monitor and evaluate variances. Assures staff participation in cost control activities.
Plans with appropriate ancillary departments for area maintenance. Assures supplies and equipment are available and/or communicates problems to appropriate department.
Assures compliance with standards of external regulatory entities, including but not limited to TJC, HFAP, CMS, IDPH, CDOH, DMH and OSHA.
Establishes a plan and assures staff compliance with re-certification for OSHA mandated education and competencies of defined content areas.
Promotes staff participation in decision-making. Conducts monthly staff meetings to convey/receive information, documents meetings.
Communicates relevant patient care information at change of shift report to administrative supervisors. Receives report from administrative supervisors and assures follow through on problems identified.
Communicates pertinent patient care and operational issues to the appropriate parties in a timely fashion.
Works collaboratively with other unit directors to provide support and effect professional practice.
Education and Research
Promotes positive educational opportunities for nurses, nursing students and technicians in collaboration with instructors
Identifies relevant research findings. Applies findings to practice issues when appropriate.
Promotes opportunities for staff development by encouraging attendance at in-service programs and continuing education activities.
Establishes and maintains an effective unit based performance improvement program. Collects and reports data in a timely manner and shares results with staff.
Collaborates with interdisciplinary team members on performance improvement mechanisms to assure total quality management.
Performs other duties as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:
Education and/or licensure requirements:

- Bachelor of Science required.
- Active Registered Professional Nurse license in the state of Illinois
- Completion of de-escalation training within 90 days of employment and annually thereafter.
- BLS.
- CPI Certification.
Experience:
-
- Minimum of 5 years related clinical nursing experience required.
- Minimum of 2 years’ experience in line management preferred.
- 1-2 years of Behavioral Health experience preferably on an inpatient setting.
- 1-2 years of substance used disorder treatment experience preferably on an inpatient setting.
