Job Title: Molecular Technologist

Reports To: Molecular General Supervisor
Position Summary:
We are seeking a meticulous and qualified Molecular Technologist to support high-complexity molecular testing in our laboratory. The technician will perform sample preparation and nucleic acid extraction for PCR-based diagnostic assays. This role requires adherence to rigorous regulatory standards and competency in laboratory techniques essential to clinical molecular diagnostics.
Primary Responsibilities:
1. Sample Preparation & High-Complexity Molecular Testing Support
a. Prepare and process clinical specimens for high-complexity PCR testing in compliance with validated protocols.
b. Perform manual and automated DNA/RNA extractions from various biological matrices.
c. Ensure accurate aliquoting, barcoding, and traceability of all samples throughout the workflow.
d. Prevent contamination and cross-reactivity through strict adherence to aseptic technique and unidirectional workflow.
2. Regulatory Compliance & Laboratory Quality
a. Follow all applicable Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and regulatory guidelines, including CLIA, CAP, CMS, OSHA, CDC, and Kentucky state requirements.
b. Maintain documentation of daily quality control (QC), reagent preparation, and equipment function checks as required under CAP and CLIA.
c. Participate in proficiency testing, internal audits, and continuous quality improvement (CQI) activities.
d. Handle and dispose of biohazardous and chemical waste per institutional and OSHA requirements.
3. Equipment Operation & Maintenance
a. Operate, clean, calibrate, and maintain laboratory instruments such as centrifuges, pipettes, and automated extraction systems.
b. Monitor reagent and supply inventory and assist with ordering to maintain uninterrupted lab operations.
c. Report equipment malfunctions and assist in resolving technical issues in coordination with senior technologists or supervisors.
4. Data Integrity & Documentation
a. Accurately document all specimen preparation steps in the Laboratory Information System (LIS) and associated logs.
b. Record QC results, reagent lot numbers, instrument settings, and troubleshooting notes in real time.
c. Report unexpected results or deviations from protocol to the Laboratory Supervisor or Technical Director in accordance with CLIA and CAP requirements.
5. Communication & Collaboration
a. Collaborate with lab team members to ensure efficient sample flow and turnaround times.
b. Provide guidance to new staff or trainees under supervision, as needed.
Qualifications and Requirements:
1.Education
a.Bachelor's degree in medical technology from an accredited university or college.
b.Bachelor's degree in the biological sciences, with one year of pertinent full-time laboratory experience in molecular methodologies.
2.Certification:
a.National certification such as ASCP (MLT or MLS) or AMT is strongly preferred and may be required depending on state law.
3.Experience:
a.At least 2 years of recent experience in a CAP-accredited clinical laboratory performing chemistry and/or hematology testing.
b.Proficient with analyzers and equipment such as QuantStudios, Kingfishers, fluid-handlers, and LIS platforms.
4.Technical Competencies:
a. Proficiency in pipetting, aseptic technique, and unidirectional workflow.
b.Experience with molecular diagnostics instrumentation, such as real-time PCR or automated liquid handlers.
c.Knowledge of LIS and electronic data entry.
Preferred Qualifications:
- National certification (e.g., ASCP, AMT, AAB) as Medical Laboratory Technician or Technologist.
- Hands-on experience with high-throughput PCR systems and laboratory automation.
- Familiarity with CLIA/CAP inspection readiness, laboratory accreditation standards, and biosafety practices (BSL-2).
- Ability to stand for long periods of time.
- 5. Troubleshooting and critical thinking skills.
