Expert Contributor
- The Design Lead is an expert in one or more design field: UI, UX, illustration, digital painting, animation, etc. They use that expertise to create new features and products or improve existing ones. They keep up to date with new techniques, tools and processes to elevate the quality of their own work, and share their expertise to continuously improve the quality and velocity of all members of the Design Department.
- When relevant, the Design Lead is responsible for the creation, and maintenance of design components libraries to ensure the visual and functional coherence of components as well as their proper implementation as part of a living Design System in collaboration with the Engineering group.
- Act as an individual contributor, creating visuals, UI's, and marketing material as needed.
- Organize user research efforts for the team in collaboration with UX researchers.
- Ensure the proper implementation of designs.
- Create and maintain design libraries and work with engineers to turn them into living design systems.
- Collaborate with other Leads on cross-team projects and assist in the efficient flow of information through the Design team. Propose process and technical improvements to raise the quality and quantity of the Design team's output.
- Keep up to date with design trends, techniques, and processes. Perform regular competitive analysis and benchmarks.
- Ensuring proper implementation of design rules and standards, and application of the design thinking process when relevant.
Team Collaboration
- The Design Lead is responsible and accountable for the quality of their team's work as well as their ability to meet agreed deadlines. The Design Lead reviews designers' work, providing clear, actionable feedback that elevates quality and helps meet business goals and design standards.
- Mentor team members to develop their design and technical skills.
- Ensure the health and performance of the team through recurring 1:1 meetings and performance reviews.
- Represent the Design team within the organization, acting as an advocate for design values and ensuring the implementation of design standards.
- Run team meetings to facilitate the flow of information within the team and the department.
- Work with stakeholders to negotiate deadlines, translate requests into design requirements, and improve processes and collaboration. Keep up to date with priorities at the company and product level.
- Create and maintain a collaborative and productive work environment between team members and coworkers from all disciplines and departments.
Management and Mentorship
- The Design Lead prioritizes tasks for the designers on their team, ensuring information is flowing, tickets are well documented and assets are available. They act as a contact point between their team and stakeholders and negotiate the scope and deadlines of requests whenever necessary.
- Mentors designers on their team, identifying their strengths and weaknesses and elevating their technical and soft skills. The Design Lead creates opportunities for growth through projects assignments and weekly 1 on 1's.
- Providing quarterly assessments of their employees' performances, evaluating technical ability and setting goals that serve both the business and the development of designers' hard and soft skills.
- Organize team schedule, assign tasks and ensure the optimal use of resources and skills. Maintain the team backlog and prioritize tickets, negotiating deadlines and scope with stakeholders as necessary.
- Review work and provide feedback to team members, ensuring excellent quality of UX and UI deliverables.
Requirements
- 5+ years experience as an individual contributor.
- Proven ability to motivate and influence others, and negotiate with Product and Engineering stakeholders.
- Expert in one or more UI design tools: Sketch, Figma, Invision, Adobe XD.
- Expert in Photoshop, working knowledge of Illustrator and After Effects.
- Excellent understanding of the specificities when designing for responsive web and mobile platforms. Excellent knowledge of Google's Material Design and Apple's Human Interface Guidelines.
- Working knowledge of HTML and CSS.
- Working knowledge of AI tools for image and video generation, such as ChatGPT, Dall-E, Freepik, Midjourney, etc.
- Highly valued: experience working with JS libraries, 3D design software, Wordpress, Bootstrap.
