Position Summary:
The Operating Room (OR) Educator is responsible for the development, implementation, and evaluation of educational programs for perioperative staff including RNs, surgical technologists, and other support roles. This role supports onboarding, continuous education, competency assessments, and professional development to ensure clinical excellence and compliance with hospital policies, regulatory requirements, and evidence-based practice.
Qualifications:
Education:
- Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing, Healthcare Administration or other clinical field required
- Master’s Degree in Nursing, Healthcare Administration or other clinical field preferred
- 3+ years' experience in an acute care Operating Room setting required
- 2+ years' experience in clinical education Preferred
Experience
- Minimum of five (5) years demonstrated in specialty, specific nursing experience required.
- Evidence of hospital-based nursing leadership and/or specific leadership experience required.
- AORN Periop 101 experience preferred
Licensure/Certification/Registration
- Current South Carolina licensure as RN (SCLLR) in good standing required.
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required.
- Advance Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) and Pediatric Advanced Life Support certification obtained within 3 months of hire.
- Specialized Certifications (CNOR) obtained within 12 months of hire.
- Certification, as defined by the American Board of Nursing Specialties, obtained within one year.
Duties & Responsibilities:
- Develop and deliver orientation and onboarding programs for new OR staff.
- Design and implement ongoing education and competency programs.
- Serve as a clinical resource and mentor to OR staff and preceptors.
- Facilitate simulation-based and hands-on training related to new technology, procedures, and protocols.
- Collaborate with surgical services leadership to identify performance improvement opportunities.
- Ensure educational programs meet The Joint Commission and other regulatory standards.
- Monitor staff performance and recommend additional training as needed.
- Maintain records of educational activities, attendance, and competency validations.
- Assist with the implementation of new equipment, procedures, and workflows.
- Coordinate student clinical rotations in the OR as applicable.
- Collaborates with the Director of Perioperative Services to adjust the program based on evaluation results.
- Participates in the development, coordination, and management of facilitating, conducting, and evaluating nursing competency
in Labor and Delivery, Post Partum and Nursery.
- Designs and identifies educational activities to address practice gaps for identified target audiences, including licensed and non-licensed healthcare personnel, in alignment with CMC clinical education requests and development processes.
- Develops activities to achieve specific outcomes related to identified deficits or opportunities for improvement in knowledge, skill and practice. Plans educational content delivery that encourages learner engagement.
- Promotes and integrates the EBP in order to continuously improve practice. Conducts, encourages, facilitates, and/or participates in research, EBP, and QI in patient care settings.
- Identifies and develops strategies to facilitate a continuous process of maturation through lifelong learning.
- Utilizes novice-to-expert continuum when developing staff. Identifies and provides opportunities for skill enhancement and mastery.
- Oversees and administers all preceptor competencies and activities for the Unit.
- Completes other duties as assigned by department leadership.
