Position Summary
Respiratory therapists are an integral part of the care team at Kootenai Health. This position is responsible for independently performing respiratory care procedures, which require the ability to interpret and follow physician orders or protocols, assess patient needs, deliver prescribed therapy and evaluate patient response. Assists with the diagnosis and management of patients with cardio pulmonary disorders.
Responsibilities
• Collaborates with appropriate disciplines to coordinate continuity of patient care from admission through discharge in support of the respiratory, medical and nursing plans of care
• Ensures appropriate operations of specialized equipment through the continuous monitoring of the patient condition and all related equipment
• Collects and analyzes sputum, blood, and breath specimens to determine levels of oxygen, carbon dioxide, and other gases
• Measures the lung capacity of a patient to determine if there is impaired function
• Demonstrates critical thinking and the ability to respond promptly to changes in workload or to make adjustments in assignments as needed to achieve optimal productivity, efficacy and quality patient care
• Demonstrates familiarity with electronic charting
• Establishes and maintain working relations with physicians and other health care personnel
• Performs a variety of tasks
• Performs other related duties as assigned
• Familiar with standard concepts, practices, and procedures within the field
• Regular and predictable attendance is an essential job function
• Competent to meet age specific needs of the unit assigned
Requirements and Minimum Qualifications
• Graduate of an accredited school of Respiratory Therapy or U.S. military equivalent required
• Credentialed as an RRT (Registered Respiratory Therapist) required
• Bachelor’s Degree in Respiratory Therapy (BSRT) preferred
• Current licensure as a Respiratory Care Practitioner in Idaho required
• BLS required
• Certification in Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) and Pediatric Advance Life support (PALS) within 6 months of hire
• Ability to communicate well and technical skills to adapt equipment and procedures
• Good customer relations, assessment, and communication skills are necessary for this job
Working Conditions
• Must be able to lift and move up to 50 lbs
• Able to be on feet (walking, standing) for at least ten hours of a twelve-hour shift.
• Must have correctable visual acuity to read patient reports and monitors
• Exposure to chemical, radiological and biological hazards requiring personal protective
• Must be able to maintain a standing and position
• Typical equipment used in a clinical job
• Must be able to bend, stoop, reach over the head and push equipment
• Exposure to hazardous chemicals, acids, cleaning solution, disinfectants, soaps, etc.
• Communicate with patients, physicians, families and co-workers in person and on telephone.
• Work with equipment and manipulate equipment settings, computer keyboard, etc.
• Exposure to needles, blood and body fluids, etc.
• Exposure to radiological hazards
• Must be able to stay calm in emergency situations
