Description Summary:
The Data Center Design Manager is responsible for overseeing the planning and design execution of multiple distributed edge data center facilities, typically supporting 5–10 MW of critical IT load. This role demands strong cross-functional leadership, a deep understanding of mission-critical design practices, and the ability to manage complex architecture and engineering consultant teams across geographically dispersed sites. The ideal candidate will excel in leading or supporting customer coordination meetings, effectively translating client requirements into actionable design decisions while ensuring alignment with DC BLOX standards. Prior experience with data center design and consulting firms or involvement in hyperscale infrastructure programs is strongly preferred.
Essential Duties:
Program Management
- Lead full lifecycle design for multiple edge data centers, from site due diligence through Issued-for-Construction (IFC) documentation and turnover to operations.
- Manage and synchronize scope, schedule, and budget across internal teams, consultants, and external stakeholders.
- Support or lead customer-facing meetings to clarify design requirements, present updates, and communicate risk or changes.
Design Execution & Oversight
- Coordinate internal and external architectural and engineering teams to ensure integrated, scalable, and code-compliant designs.
- Review and validate MEP system designs including power distribution (MV/LV), UPS systems, generators, cooling topologies (DX, chilled water), BMS/SCADA integration, and rack layouts.
- Own the creation, review, and update of Basis of Design (BOD) documentation, Test Fits, and consultant deliverables.
Cross-Functional Collaboration
- Partner with DC BLOX teams in construction, operations, power, procurement, IT/networking, and real estate to align design intent with execution and lifecycle performance.
- Engage with utility providers, AHJs, and vendors to drive forward early power availability, utility coordination, and long-lead equipment procurement.
- Participate in customer coordination meetings—serving as a technical point of contact for design discussions and adjustments as needed.
Process & Innovation
- Help evolve DC BLOX's Edge Design Standards, drawing on project experience and industry benchmarks (e.g., Uptime Tier Standards, ASHRAE, NEC, IBC).
- Introduce design improvements that support modularity, speed-to-market, energy efficiency, and AI readiness.
- Evaluate innovative construction methods (modular/prefab), materials, and design tools to improve overall project delivery and lifecycle value.
Education/Training/Experience:
- 4–7 years of experience in data center design, A/E coordination, or mission-critical program management.
- Bachelor's degree in Architecture, Engineering, or a related technical discipline.
- Strong familiarity with data center mechanical and electrical infrastructure (UPS, switchgear, chillers, CRAHs/CRACs, generators, etc.).
- Experience managing consultants and vendors across multiple projects or markets.
- Experience in client-facing roles, including coordination or direct interface during design discussions or delivery meetings.
- Skilled in interpreting and coordinating construction documents, shop drawings, and submittals.
- Proficiency with AutoCAD, Revit, Bluebeam, and design/construction documentation workflows.
- Excellent communication, project tracking, and organizational skills.
Preferred Qualifications
- PMP, PE, or AIA certification.
- Experience in hyperscale, edge, or colocation environments.
- Familiarity with ANSI/BICSI, Uptime Tier Standards, LEED, and NFPA/NEC code frameworks.
- Experience with modular or prefabricated design and deployment strategies.
- Ability to navigate local permitting and code requirements across Southeastern U.S. markets.
