UNIT ASSISTANT – FULL TIME
OUTPATIENT PHYSICIAN CLINIC
MEDICAL/SURGICAL SERVICES

Under the general direction of the Unit Manager the Unit Assistant is responsible for the coordination and performance of clerical duties and to assist in the establishment of effective communication patterns within the unit and the hospital. Supports the vision, mission and value statements of the Bermuda Hospitals Board by working cooperatively with all disciplines. Responds to change with a positive attitude and willingness to learn new ways to accomplish work activities. May be responsible for some scheduling of staff.
Key responsibilities include:
- Greets patients, clients, visitors and hospital staff in a congenial, respectful and welcoming manner
- Manages telephone calls and visitors, minimizing interruptions to Nursing staff. Confers with other departments as appropriate to provide for an interdisciplinary approach to patient’s needs. Maintains an up to date information board for the unit. Communicates information accurately and in a timely manner. Receives, opens, stamp and distributes the daily mail. Where necessary, vets client enquire
- Prepares stores requisitions for processing through the Purchasing department. Receives and distributes supplies
- Assist the nurse with updating the electronic medical record (PEARL)
- Keep all commonly used areas clean, tidy and orderly for a busy ward including receiving and unpacking supplies to make available when stocks are low.( including unpacking medical supplies from boxes and kept orderly available for immediate use
- Document patient admissions, discharges and transfers
Required Skills, Knowledge and Abilities required:
- High School graduate with Secretarial /typing course
- Knowledge of Microsoft Suites. Knowledge of AS400 would be an asset
- Minimum of one year’s clerical experience preferably in a healthcare environment
- Ability to cope in high stress situations; remain calm and focused in a busy working environment
- Excellent written, verbal and non-verbal communication skills required
Schedule: 35 hours per week
Salary: BP13-15 - $55,871.06 per annum
