School Health Assistant – School Nurse Program
Location: South Bend, IN (travel within SBCSC district required)

Reports To: Manager, School Nurse Program

As a School Health Assistant, you’ll support our mission by working directly with students, school staff, and families to provide compassionate, timely, and essential health services. This role is ideal for someone with a healthcare background and a passion for working with children in an educational setting.
About the Role
In partnership with the School Nurse, you will provide hands-on support for students’ health needs. You’ll help manage the school’s medical office, respond to student health concerns, perform screenings, and maintain accurate records. You'll be an essential link between the school, families, and healthcare professionals.
Key Responsibilities

Administer first aid and medications under the guidance of a School Nurse and with written parental consent.

Assist with health assessments and routine screenings (vision, hearing, dental, height/weight).

Provide emergency care and contact emergency services as needed.

Maintain and update electronic student health records.

Communicate with parents/guardians and school officials regarding health concerns and referrals.

Support school-based health education and distribute materials on hygiene, disease prevention, and wellness.

Report contagious conditions to the School Nurse to ensure compliance with public health laws.

Provide clerical and administrative support in the school medical office.

Maintain a sanitary and organized work environment using universal precautions.
Qualifications
-
Education: High school diploma or equivalent required.

Certification: Current CPR/BCLS certification required. CNA or HHA certification preferred.

Experience: Prior experience working in a school or with children preferred.

Licensure: Valid driver’s license with good driving record and access to a vehicle; must maintain auto liability insurance.

Health Requirements: Must complete a physical exam and annual TB test.

Proficient in performing basic patient care procedures.

Strong written and verbal communication skills.

Excellent organization and attention to detail.

Ability to multitask and document accurately in electronic health systems.

Competency in computer applications (data entry, spreadsheets, word processing).

Ability to maintain confidentiality and professionalism in a school setting.
Work Environment & Physical Requirements

Work is performed in a school or office setting.

Requires travel within the South Bend Community School Corporation district.

Must be able to lift, stand, bend, and perform tasks requiring physical effort and stamina.
