JOB SUMMARY
-
The Lactation Consultant/Nurse Educator provides support for the breastfeeding mother, in the maternal child health units by instruction and guidance in successful breastfeeding techniques as well as maintaining a Lactation Help Line for calls from mothers concerning breastfeeding. Also works closely with the staff of Mother-Baby, Nursery, NICU, and Labor and Delivery by providing up-to-date education of advances in breastfeeding information. Provides additional education support as Childbirth Class Educator, Nurse Educator for staff on an as needed basis.

DUTIES AND ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Overall performance of below indicated essential job duties:

Provides teaching and educational material to the patient and/or significant other as needed according to the care, treatment services and identified risks specific to the patient and documents patient and/or family understanding.

Provides inpatient and outpatient education to patients, families, and/or significant other(s) as received by referrals from physicians, nursing, staff, and interdisciplinary departments

Evaluates patient education materials. Obtains and distributes patient education resource materials to physician offices as well as maintaining educational materials for the Mother-Baby unit.

EDUCATION/LICENSE/CERTIFICATION/OTHER REQUIREMENTS
-
Minimum requirement:
-
Graduate from an accredited school of nursing for Registered Nurses.

Maintains active RN license in the Commonwealth of Kentucky and any other states as applicable.

Achieves and maintains American Heart Association
-
Basic Life Support (BLS),
-
Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) within 90 days of start.
-
Achieves and maintains Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) within 90 days of start.
-
Certified Lactation Counselor (CLC) certificate obtained within 1 year and maintained.
-
Must have 1 year of acute care experience as a Registered Nurse.

Preferred qualifications:
-
Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing

Minimum 2 years of experience in Maternal Child Health

Constantly works near moving mechanical parts

Constantly exposed toblood and/or body fluids andinfection.

Occasionally exposed to toxic or caustic chemicals

Occasionally exposed to risk of radiation

The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.

Constantly required to communicate with patients and other care team requiring talking and hearing.
