For more than 20 years, we have partnered with thousands of middle and high school students who aspire to be the first in their family to graduate with a degree or certificate. About the role
The Director of Human Resources and Talent is a senior leader responsible for guiding and strengthening all facets of Breakthrough's human resources, talent acquisition, staff development and retention, and performance practices for full-time staff, interns and participants in national service. The Director of Human Resources and Talent will have a strong focus on maintaining and improving the systems that allow talent at all levels to access and thrive in the Breakthrough community. This includes developing inclusive hiring strategies, ensuring legal and organizational compliance with HR policies, supporting AmeriCorps program administration, and embedding equity into every talent-related process. Reporting to the Chief Operations Officer (COO), the Director of Human Resources and Talent will also co-lead a growing Operations team and serve as a strategic partner across the organization to drive impact through Breakthrough's most critical asset: its people.
Human Resources
- Under the direction of the COO, lead core HR functions, including benefits administration, employee relations, compliance, handbook development, and policy implementation.
- Oversee the administration, optimization, and continuous improvement of the Human Resources Information System (HRIS) to ensure accurate data management, efficient workflows, and a positive user experience for staff.
- Manage and lead the evaluation process of all staff, specifically full-time staff annual review cycles and AmeriCorps member mid-service reviews.
- Act as an employee champion and change agent, ensuring staff feel heard, supported, and able to thrive.
- Partner with the COO to ensure HR systems reflect legal best practices and equity-centered design.
- Develop and oversee employee retention and engagement strategies, including inclusive performance management, employee lifecycle planning, and internal mobility structures.
Talent Acquisition, Onboarding, and Development
- Support and supervise the Talent Acquisition Specialist in recruiting all staff - full time, part-time, temporary, seasonal and participants in national service (AmeriCorps).
- Oversee the design and lead equitable and transparent recruitment and selection systems for full-time staff and AmeriCorps members.
- Champion inclusive hiring and developmental practices that reduce bias and increase access and representation at all levels of the organization.
- Oversee the execution of comprehensive onboarding programs that ensure cultural integration, role clarity, and early success for all hires.
- Collaborate with the Leadership Team and the Associate Director (AD) of People Strategies and Culture to provide and evaluate professional development offerings for full-time staff and AmeriCorps members.
- Ensure talent practices—from recruitment to exit—actively interrupt bias and promote inclusion and belonging.
- Partner with the AD of People Strategies and Culture on Breakthrough's to support staff growth in cultural competency through learning opportunities, reflection spaces, and resource sharing.
AmeriCorps Program Oversight
- Support and supervise the AD of AmeriCorps in hiring, placing, onboarding, and evaluating year-round and summer AmeriCorps members.
- Act an organizational contact with the state service commission (OneStar) and ensure compliance with all AmeriCorps grant requirements
- Collaborate with the COO and AD of AmeriCorps to work across departments to ensure AmeriCorps members are receiving high-quality supervision, development, and support.
About You
- Strong commitment to the mission and values of the organization
- Extensive experience required, likely 8 years or more, in leading the talent, human resource, and culture practices of nonprofit or mission-driven organizations
- Experience preferred in leading or supporting high-quality internship programs and/or AmeriCorps programs
- A proven ability to implement and maximize an HRIS
- A demonstrated competency in creating professional development sequences that support staff growth and pathways to promotion
- A skilled public speaker and presenter to adult learners
- An ability to identify opportunities for greater efficiency and effectiveness in the talent practices of a nonprofit or similar organization
- An ability to supervise and evaluate the work of others
- A commitment to growth mindset, to believe that people can develop the skills, knowledge, and abilities to achieve their aspirations
- A commitment to social justice and equity and to deepening understanding of power and privilege
- A strong competency in and a commitment to leading equity work

COMPENSATION and BENEFITS
- Competitive salary between $76,000-$100,000 depending on experience and qualifications

The salary range listed represents the low and high end of the anticipated salary range for the year in which the position is filled. The actual salary offered for this position will depend on a number of factors including overall years of experience, relevant years of experience, skills and qualifications.
