Primary Function: Manages the maintenance and repair of all locomotive power units, assures that those responsible are maintaining their locomotives properly. Prepares budget and keeps spending in control for spare parts and equipment. Trains mechanical specialists and others as needed.
Principle Responsibilities
- Responsible for all maintenance, repair, and inspections of locomotives and railcars
- Prepares and properly forecasts the work to be done
- Assures best price on materials used
- Keeps adequate but controlled parts inventory
- Prepares budget and measures performance to budget
- Assures repairs are completed properly
- Arranges to have mandatory 92 day, annual, and tri-annual inspections complete so as not to negatively affect operations
- Assure safe performance of department and the railroad
- Maintains a safe, orderly, and clean workplace
- Participates in and provides support for derailments and investigations of incidents/accidents
- Audits team members for safe practices
- Uses effective corrective action to correct unsafe conditions/behaviors
- Responsible for ensuring adherence to FRA and AAR rules and standards
- Assures work scope is high quality, Measures quality of work performed
- Provides feedback on quality of work done
- Works to improve product and process to enhance quality levels
- Uses effective corrective action to improve/correct poor quality
- Assure productivity/efficiency of mechanical department
- Achieves forecasted levels of work to be done

Required Skills and Experience
- Minimum of 10 years’ experience in mechanical/electrical/hydraulic and pneumatic maintenance and repair.
- Minimum of 4 years’ experience in management/ leading personnel.
- Minimum of 5 years locomotive experience, troubleshooting, print reading.
- Analysis experience.
- Able to make decisions quickly and correctly.

Work Environment
- This job operates in a professional office environment, a shop environment, and out on the railroad. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets and fax machines.

- Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.
Required Education
- High school diploma or GED required. Associates Degree or higher preferred. Mechanical or technical schooling is desirable.
Travel
- Occasional Travel to VA Beach- will include per diem
Schedule
- M-F 7am to 3pm and call outs
