Your Opportunity
As an Urban Planner at mddl, you will execute planning and development projects, build high-profile municipal client relationships, and manage consultant teams. You will champion innovative middle housing projects and municipal partnerships, facilitating strategic initiatives and delivering impactful educational content through our mddl School and associated programs.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead urban planning and policy development services for municipal clients, including streamlining processes, comprehensive planning initiatives, zoning analyses, and regulatory assessments.
- Manage and implement initiatives such as Policy Harmonization and Fast Track Programs, ensuring alignment with client goals and project timelines.
- Deliver feasibility studies, site assessments, and prototyping activities, ensuring robust analysis to guide project design and planning decisions.
- Collaborate cross-functionally with design, construction, development teams, architects, and engineers to deliver cohesive, innovative housing solutions.
- Ensure all plans and projects comply with relevant local, provincial/state, and federal regulations, and prepare documentation for planning approvals.
- Provide strategic direction and content development for mddl School programming, workshops, educational modules, webinars, and social media to empower our ecosystem of community builders.
- Facilitate community engagement and stakeholder consultations, proactively addressing concerns and promoting transparent, cooperative planning guidance.
- Prepare comprehensive plans, strategic documentation, and visual presentations for planning approvals, grants, and advocacy purposes.
- Represent mddl at public events, industry forums, and conferences, fostering networks and promoting thought leadership in middle housing and urban planning.
- Oversee junior staff, providing mentorship, direction and support for their professional development.
Skills & Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in urban planning or related discipline; master’s degree is preferred.
- Minimum of 7 years of relevant urban planning experience, including significant exposure to municipal projects and middle housing development.
- Proven ability to manage complex, multidisciplinary projects with adaptability, foresight, and proactive critical thinking.
- Highly organized and capable of prioritizing tasks in a fast-paced, evolving environment, with a strong ability to pivot in response to changing circumstances.
- Recognized for delivering high-caliber work, leading with initiative, and consistently exceeding expectations in both individual and collaborative contexts.
- Demonstrated leadership in managing complex planning projects and cross-functional teams.
- Expert knowledge of governing planning policies, zoning bylaws and related land use frameworks.
- Exceptional communication skills, adept at clearly articulating complex concepts and strategies to diverse audiences in plain language both verbally and in writing.
- Asset to have knowledge of building codes.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite and Adobe Creative Suite.
- Experience with Figma for visual design is considered an asset.
- Familiarity with Asana or similar project management tools is an asset.
