The Role
Crafty is seeking a Software Engineer II who will report directly to the Director of Engineering. This role is for engineers with foundational experience who are ready to take ownership of medium-sized projects, work collaboratively in agile teams, and contribute to the continuous improvement of Crafty's technology stack. You will work on delivering impactful solutions while deepening your technical expertise.

Ideal Experience
- 2-4 years of professional full stack software development experience.
- Experience in building and maintaining scalable applications.
- Exposure to CI/CD pipelines and cloud-based services.
Role Goals
- SMART Goal #1 (Development): Contribute to successful pod delivery by consistently completing planned work within sprint cycles.
- Specific:Work collaboratively with the pod to accurately estimate, prioritize, and complete sprint tasks. Proactively unblock work and support sprint planning through clear communication of progress and risks.
- Measurable (by Pod):Achieve 90% or higher sprint goal task completion rate in at least 5 out of the next 6 sprints measured by Pod. Demonstrate ownership by proactively updating tickets, attending all ceremonies, and contributing to sprint retros.
- Achievable:This level of contribution aligns with current responsibilities and tools available, and assumes continued support from engineering leadership and the pod.
- Relevant:Delivering work within sprint commitments ensures predictable progress, builds team trust, and helps Crafty deliver value to users consistently.
- Time-bound:Performance measured across the next 3 months (6 sprints), with progress reviewed during regular 1:1s and quarterly check-ins.
- SMART Goal #2 (Delivery): Ensure high-quality code delivery by focusing on testing, code review, and observability.
- Specific:Write testable, reliable code and participate in thorough peer reviews. Proactively monitor deployed features and respond to issues with quick triage and resolution.
- Measurable:Ensure that 90%+ of assigned features or milestones are delivered within 10% of the planned timeline. Limit post-release bugs to no more than 1 critical hot fix and no more than 3 total bugs per project. Use delivery retros to track missed targets and contribute to continuous improvement efforts.
- Achievable:Support for test frameworks, QA practices, and monitoring tools are already in place. Engineers are expected to own the quality of their work.
- Relevant:Minimizing production issues improves platform reliability and user trust, while reducing time spent on reactive work.
- Time-bound:Evaluated quarterly, with tracking in Shortcut and post-deploy reviews.
- SMART Goal #3 (Collaboration): Strengthen team effectiveness and knowledge transfer through intentional collaboration with Product and engineering peers.
- Specific:Actively participate in feature discovery, pair programming, and knowledge sharing. Present at least one internal tech share or contribute to team documentation per quarter.
- Measurable:Participate in at least 2 cross-functional discovery or planning sessions per quarter. Contribute to or lead 1+ internal knowledge-sharing activity (platform chat, doc, or demo) every quarter.
- Achievable:Opportunities are available within pods and across the tech team, with support from tech leads and Product Managers.
- Relevant:Fostering collaboration and shared understanding improves team velocity, reduces silos, and helps others learn from your work.
- Time-bound:Measured quarterly, aligned with team planning and engineering rituals

Our compensation amount for this role is $110,00 to $130,000 per year in Chicago. Final offer amounts are determined by multiple factors including cost of living based on location, candidate experience and expertise, and may vary from the amounts listed above.
