Summary/objective
A licensed Clinical Laboratory Scientist is responsible for processing of patient specimens in a timely, appropriate and accurate manner utilizing the application of principles, theories and tech-niques, professional judgment, computer proficiency, microscopic proficiency and excellent com-munication skill, both written and verbal. The position includes utilizing, maintaining and trouble-shooting of specialized equipment, computers and test methodologies. The CLS provides testing services to patients of all ages which requires an understanding of the functional/developmental age and needs of the patient. In addition, the CLS provides supervision to the phlebotomy staff in specimen collection and processing.
Pay: $49.61-$59.53
Essential functions
• Follows all standard precautions and safety protocols
• Analyzes patient samples in the laboratory following standard procedures as outlined in the departmental policies and procedures including High Complexity Tests as defined by CLIA
• Organize daily workload and prioritize patient samples
• Incorporate age-appropriate care for the patients and their testing needs during testing
• Identify abnormal and/or critical conditions and values and take appropriate actions per standards and policies
• Perform and verify QC and Proficiency samples
• Perform preventive maintenance, calibrations, troubleshooting and documentation for the various test procedures and analyzers
• Maintain appropriate use and inventories of the departmental supplies
• Demonstrate necessary computer skills
• Demonstrate flexibility to assignments, varied hours, shifts and overtime coverage as deemed necessary by the Laboratory Manager
• Assists in training new personnel and supervision of phlebotomy staff
• Observes all required hospital policies, procedures, standards and regulations
• Supports the hospital goals and objectives while looking toward improving its performance
• Interacts effectively and professionally with the public, patients, providers and staff
• Completes special projects as assigned
Competencies
• Required completion of competency shown individual lab instrumentation and procedures as listed in 90 day and yearly competency evaluation. These include but are not limited to all Bloodbank procedures, Vitros maintenance and QC, DXH 600 maintenance and QC, Stago maintenance and QC and Evident knowledge.
• Daily review of verified results will be assessed for accuracy and completeness
• Weekly review of documentation of critical results and bi-weekly review of STAT TAT will be assessed as part of ensuring high standards of quality required of the CLS
• CLS will demonstrate troubleshooting solutions to highly complex quality control variants including but not limited to instrument calibrations, QC acceptance/rejection, and instru-ment maintenance as needed – if maintenance is needed, service is required by outside service engineer.
• These competencies include but are not limited to Hematology, Chemistry, Immunology, ImmunoHematology, Serology, Urinalysis, Microscopy and Coagulation.
• CLS will also demonstrate a high level of interpersonal skills required in communication with other laboratory staff, hospital staff and other facility interactions.

Work environment
CLS is exposed to many biological hazards including blood, urine and stool with high exposure to communicable diseases and blood borne pathogens and rare exposure to toxic substances. Ele-vation in noise due to equipment is common.
Physical demands
The CLS must be able to prioritize and reevaluate specimens while being interrupted or as condi-tions change. They must be able to walk, stand, push, pull and lift. They must have the ability to problem solve under stressful situations including performing complex mathematical analysis and calculations. They must have the ability to lift heavy reagent containers, up to 30 lbs. They must have the ability to use different computer systems concurrently. They must have the ability to de-termine color reactions and shading.

• Bachelor of Science in appropriate field
• Current California CLS license required
Preferred education and experience
• Prior hospital experience preferred but not required
